We are in the process of building a house and I have been coerced into
finishing the trim (baseboards, window and door trim, ...).
I plan to stain the white pine boards (1x4's and 1x6,s mainly)and then
finishing with Minwax polyurethane to match or coordinate the 4-6x6x14
and 6-6x12x16 white pine beams installed during framing.
I finished the beams with one coat of stain (golden oak) and then
three coats of brush on satin finish polyurethane (sanding after each
of the first two coats).
I plan on staining the trim with a pad (after sanding the planer and
other mill marks out) and see no problem there.
However, I would like to spray the polyurethane on the trim in the
interest of speed and convenience (there is a lot of lineal feet of
trim to finish). My initial test with Minwax (stain and then three
coats of satin polyurethane spray)did not produce the same luster as
the brush on poly. I plan to try both semi-gloss and gloss spray on a
test piece to see if I can get closer to the appearance of the
installed beams.
Any suggestions on upgrading the finishing task???
