OT: Weather report and Calvin

If there is anybody still out there, hello. Just wondering how youse
folks are doing with the weather and all. Here in So. Cal., we have
about three feet on the ground (try to picture that) with more on the
way. I can see the top of the deck railing, if only just. Today I will
try to dig out the 4wd truck so we can get to the post office and
grocery store tomorrow. About the only service left here is the LA
Times newspaper fairy who, somehow, still plunks a bright orange package
on the driveway every morning before 5:30. The guy is a wizard.

Otherwise, we are in good shape (figuratively). We have lost power four
times in the last week, but it has come back on within 15 minutes each
time. Then go to http://www.angelfire.com/wa/zzaran/calvin.html for a
selection of Calvin and Hobbes' best snowman cartoons. Enjoy.

Yup. Watterson never licensed any of his work to anyone. The pressure
to do so was one of the reasons he decided to pack it in, IIRC.

We've got about 8" on the ground (got about 3" over Christmas and NY),
and are currently at -40 with wind chill. It'll be colder overnight as
the wind picks up.

Pretty tough on the dog, who's a wiener dog/terrier cross and has no
undercoat to speak of. It's pretty much a 20 foot dash 'n pee.

This morning Regina is reporting -38C (-51C with wind chill)...

It's -31C (-44C with WC) here in ToonTown (2 hours north).

I gotta go warm up the car now.

I came back from a vacation in my hometown in southern LA on 12-26 to
find the snow plowed in up to the hood of the car in the long-term
parking lot at the airport in Toledo. Got back to the house--we had to
park in the neighbor's driveway that Sunday night. I spent about an
hour and a half that Sunday night clearing a car-sized spot in our
driveway--snow between knee and waist deep in the driveway. My
favorite part of this anecdote is that our neighbor on the other side
pulled into his driveway about 15 minutes into shoveling. I know he
has a snowblower, and he knows I know he has a snowblower. So he pulls
in and looks at me, and I look at him looking at me, and he looks at me
looking at him, and he goes right inside and does whatever he does.
Bastard. See if I weedwack his fence THIS friggin spring.

the shop and make a sled, then use it. Snow sled, not saw sled. That

Well, I'd gladly trade...we're under freezing rain which is expected to
last the rest of today, tonight and tomorrow morning before it
(eventually) is <supposed> to turn over to snow...the rumbles of thunder
are certainly indicative there's enough warm air and moisture aloft to
make it a fairly high likelihood they're not far off... :(

So far, no wind, but that rarely holds for long here...

We got about 2' on Christmas eve but the temperature went up into the mid 50
a few days later. There is no snow on the ground...

Well, here (southern Indiana) it's been in the low 60's the last few days.
Of course back Christmas eve it was something below zero at night
with a foot or so of snow and frozen rain; a few days later there was the
freezing fog.
Got to love that Ohio Valley weather, if you don't like it, wait a
few minutes, it'll change.

> try to dig out the 4wd truck so we can get to the post office and

Makes me nervous to see a 4wd coming in the snow. Just last week
I looked in the mirror of my Buick and saw the one that just had squeezed
me into the deep, soft, white stuff stop rocking back and forth on his
drivers door.

When I delivered papers there were a few bad winters where we
hooked the mutt to the sled and let him pull the paper bag. Temperatures
in the teens, papers probably out weighted him four or five to one,
atleast six inches of snow, otherwise we would have been on bikes.
He enjoyed it, but one day it was too cold and his feet got to bleeding;
we made him ride the rest of the way.
He would have much rather kept pulling.

'course we was kids back then.
Hey, this is getting close to being a "five miles to school in the snow,
uphill, both ways" story! Cool, I AM turning in to my old man.

Well, I live where there's BIG snow, but it's so common we take it for
granted.

Nonetheless, the dog story reminds me of my dog's problem during a similar
cold snap last year. After dragging his undercarriage through the snow and
getting it wet, he would sit out and watch the world (can you say numbnuts?)
go by. Succeeded in getting a good case of frostbite on his penis sheath.
Vet said it wasn't that unusual, and given his reaction to licking the
salve, I don't think he did it for the rub....

trad ya, he in Boise we had one snow storm and only got 1" and that melted
later the same day, up until this week it's been in the 50s, cold and damp
until this week it dropped into the 30's and dropping into the teens at
night but big deal. I want snow!

...and here in Syracuse where we normally get a lot more snow than Buffalo
(though they get more press for their snow), we've had diddly for snow this
year. We've had a couple of dustings, one front that dumped a foot, and
that's it. Now - not a flake of snow on the ground. Hopefully that will
change before too long.

Of course, here (in Edmonton AB), it's been between -20 and -30 degrees
Celcius for the last week. This week, it's suppposed to warm up to close to
freezing tomorrow, but then drop down again to -15/-30. And to think I left
Miami, FL for this...

BTW, you've got more snow than us. Too damn cold to snow here!
