To all Americans who brightly wish everyone they see a "Merry
Christmas", *please* remember that the majority of the world is not
Christian.
People seem to take great delight in saying things like "don't be a
Scrooge - it's Christmas!!!". Well, that might be important in your
universe, but not everyone's. For me, this year, Christmas is just
another Thursday.
If you are celebrating, Happy Holidays.

Oh, I have strong beliefs about many things - gravity for instance. I
celebrate its existance every day I am here on earth.
Merry Christmas and praise be to gravity.

So people celebrating a special time to them makes them intolerant?
You will only be satisfied if people skulk about, whispering Christmas
greetings to one another only after a secret handshake signifying they
are accepting of such a greeting? Yeah, that sounds real tolerant.

I'm down 32 pounds since June, although after this week (cookies, rum
balls, blueberry and pumpkin pie, almond bark, truffles, nuts,
alcoholic drinks, lemon cake, etc, etc) I've got to tip the scales.
Happens every year, and difficult to stop!

What an intolerant thing to say! What about all those people who

On the sixth day God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said: "Today I am
going to create a land called Canada, it will be a land of outstanding
natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain
goats and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and
trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy
beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon."
God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so as to make the
inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they
shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."
"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous
to these Canadians?"
"Not really," replied God, "just wait and see the neighbours I am going
to give them."

The very concept of Christianity is the most offensive religion to man.
It's intended to be. It states that nothing man can do is worthy enough.
It's the only religion that teaches man can't earn his way to heaven, that
Jesus was necessary to take the place of man so that God's justice could be
done. We believe that God being God could not overlook the sins of man and
that he chose to assume the burden himself by sending his perfect son to die
in our place. In simpler words.... you aren't and never will be good enough
so that means you're stuck....no hope. Unless.....he fixes it for you
Another burst of mental flatulence.
How about you let others say what they want and display the grace to
acknowledge good wishes.

The intolerance exhibited in this thread is staggering, but thankfully
not universal.
You're right. It began with your original post. The thing about having a
particular belief is that it isn't one if you don't believe in it. So what
people like you are saying is it's ok if you have a belief as long as you
aren't the sort of person who stands up for their beliefs. Don't practice
it openly, don't profess it and don't believe in it enough to espouse it to
those around you who may care about. I believe my beliefs are right..
that's why I believe in them. I believe my beliefs are best for me which
equates to me believing they are the best for those around me. I understand
you may not believe in my beliefs but do not make the mistake of believing
I'm the sort of man who professes a belief but doesn't really believe in it.
And what do you think is better? Judism perhaps -- where you can only be one
of the "chosen" through a so inclusive method of birth?

How come we choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?

You should have said "the majority of MY world"

Does that mean you have to work just like every other Thursday? If not, be
glad that you have the time off.

How about Health, Happiness, and Prosperity in the New Year to you.
this is a topic better left alone on this NG.

Reminds me of a good joke.
What does the insomniac agnostic dyslexic do with his spare time?

So, am I supposed to get upset if I hear someone say "Happy Kwanza" or
"Happy Chanuka"? If someone wishes you a "Merry Christmas" and you take
this personally, you need to really examine the way YOU view yourself in the
context of everyone else, not the other way around.
Last time I looked freedom of speech wasn't a "majority rules" type of
thing.

I am sorry for whatever has you feeling so poorly; but it is just an
expression, like "how are you?"
If the person likes saying it, what does it cost you to let it pass?
And... what does it have to do with woodworking?
To all Americans who brightly wish everyone they see a "Merry

WRONG!! Check out some statistics null. Christianity leads with the
highest percentage of followers in the world.

Religious Population of the World, 1999
(in thousands)
Statistics of the world's religions are only very rough
approximations. Aside from Christianity, few religions, if any, attempt to
keep statistical records; and even Protestants and Catholics employ
different methods of counting members.
All persons of whatever age who have received baptism in the Catholic
Church are counted as members, while in most Protestant Churches only those
who "join" the church are numbered. The compiling of statistics is further
complicated by the fact that in China one may be at the same time a
Confucian, a Taoist, and a Buddhist. In Japan, one may be both a Buddhist
and a Shintoist.

Funny thing is, I've worked with many non-Christians, but none have ever
turned down a Christmas bonus. Or insisted they come to work that day. The
check is always cashed.
Well, Happy Thursday to you !

Well, I'm not sure I'm an agnostic, but...I'm also a lot like the old Victorian

Well said!
I AM a Christian, my family & I celebrate CHRISTmas and Easter. Yes, we
celebrate by exchanging gifts, and yes, we spend money for them, but that
spending is not the "reason for the season"!
It just so happens that my best friend is Jewish, and does NOT celebrate
these holidays, but instead celebrates his Jewish holy days(BTW, if you
consult Webster, several of the definitions of *holiday* are in reference to
*HOLY day*, so all you PC nuts out there better find a new word!). We
frequently read our Bibles and pray together, honoring the similarities and
respecting the differences, without trying to "ram" our own beliefs down
others throats.
As long as I'm in *rant* mode . . . Something to really infuriate the PC
nuts . . I volunteer in elementary school for said best friend, who teaches
2,3,4th grade spec. ed. kids with emotional problems. Every Monday morning
before school a small group including the principal, my Jewish friend, a
black woman, and me, meet in an empty classroom for about 15min. to talk
and(heaven forbid) *PRAY* for a good week in teaching and that we may be
guided & successful in helping the children.
Rant/off
Everyone have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thank you, end of story.

Replace "no" with "yk" for real email address
Actually that was out of context. Paul was writing to his fellow
brethren in Rome instructing them on how to behave. Not offending your
brother as mentioned in the text refers to brothers in Christ.
The very concept of Christianity is the most offensive religion to man.
It's intended to be. It states that nothing man can do is worthy enough.
It's the only religion that teaches man can't earn his way to heaven, that
Jesus was necessary to take the place of man so that God's justice could be
done. We believe that God being God could not overlook the sins of man and
that he chose to assume the burden himself by sending in perfect son to die
in our place. In simpler words.... you aren't and never will be good enough
so that means you're stuck....no hope. Unless.....he fixes it for you.

Um ... try reading the very first sentence on the page that you quote.
It states:
"Approximately 33% of the world's population is Christian. Another 18%
is Muslim. Another 13% is Hindu"
(If you work the numbers, you'll find that Roman Catholics, affiliated
Christians, etc., are the breakdown of the 32.8%.)
Read twice, post once.

I figure he's trolling.
Me, I'll wish anyone a Merry Christmas, Hppy Hogfather's Day, Happy
Hunakah (?), Happy Kawanza (?), Happy Summer/Winter Solstice Day, Happy
Festivus Day, etc. And, if I wish them a Merry Christmas, Happy Easter,
or whatever, and they wish me their equivalent of the same, no prob.
I'm not offended, because I accept the greeting in the spirit it was
given. And, I've never had any problem with me telling someone Merry
Christmas, or whatever, because they've always accepted it in the spirit
in which it was given. As long as it's not human sacrifice, I basically
have no problem with any of it.
So, I'll wish you all a Merry Christmas. In return you can wish me
a merry or happy whatever. No prob.

No reason to be offended by such a comment though either, is there? Do you

Pounds, stones, kilos... I'm depressed no matter what you call them.
I saw my wife's cousin today. Good griminy she lost a LOT of weight!
Dropped 150 pounds since last year.
From 300 to 150. What a difference!
I'm still trying to come to terms with my world getting turned upside down.
Having seen what her "twin" cousin looks like at 150 pounds, it's really
hard for me not to wish SWMBO would lose 50 pounds and catch up. Yowza she
would look good. Hot even. I never imagined that my wife could ever be
"hot." I didn't marry her for her looks, shall we say.

I am deeply offended by your mentioning gravity. For you see, I step on the
scale every once in awhile and this "gravity" concept is surely spawned from
the depths of hell. Please refrain from mentioning gravity anymore.

So? I don't get offended by all the Christmas stuff. I even call it
"Christmas" instead of insisting on calling it something else. We
celebrate on the 25th because everyone else does, but today is actually the
big day for us. Bright days ahead from now until June. I'm stoked! I
hate the dark half of the year.

How about appreciating the diversity and being tolerant of beliefs different
than your own.

Anyone who doesn't care about Christmas is free to ignore it.
