I just finished taking out the floors in my kitchen/dining and living areas.
I want to lay 5.2mm lauan over the subfloor before I install the new floor
over it. My question is would this stapler ...

1 5/8" staples be adequate enough to install the lauan? The price is great,
I need it to put down around 20 sheets of lauan. Thanks in advance.

Use 1 1/2" underlayment nails. Apply them with a hammer. If you use
screws, take a second mortgage and plan to be screwing for a long, long
time.

Good advice. Take care of your prostate and it will take care of you.
Personally I'd use screws. They go down fast and don't come oose like
nails can.

Wouldn't those go all the way through the subfloor, leaving
points all over the underside of your house (while blowing
large holes out of the subfloor if it's MDF)?
I'd use much shorter staples and acrylic cement to keep things
sane and creak-free. I love that stuff: it doesn't stink and
tacks in 15 minutes. I just used some to lay pad and carpeting
(commercial) in my bathroom a couple weeks ago.
That's an excellent price on the stapler. Hmmm, I need to get
to Medford this week, anyway.

I wouldn't use it. You want ring shank underlayment nails. The staples
could loosen and squeak.
