It has nothing to do with the seller or the buyer on eBay. I have been
selling and purchasing on eBay for five and half years, but I quit using the
service a couple of months ago when I started to receive very official
looking, fraudulent e-mails asking me to cancel my PayPal payment and remit
it to a different address immediately after winning a bid. The scary thing
is that they not only had my name and e-mail address; they also knew that I
purchased items using "Buy it Now" on auctions in which the buyer must use
PayPal to secure the item. eBay and PayPal both have what looks to be
backdoors into their systems (or someone is running a data mining
application on raw packets traversing the net) because names and e-mail
addresses are not public knowledge on auctions. IMHO, there is has been a
serious breach of security in one or both of these organizations.

I too received one of the e-mails requesting that I forward my PayPal
payment to a different address on a "Buy it Now" auction that required
immediate payment. The e-mail message looked authentic and the routing
headers were spoofed very well. Plus, the speed at which the message
arrived was truly amazing. There are most definitely people out there that
are mining listings that meet the above listed criteria, and comparing the
winner bidder names against data mined through fraudualent PayPal activity.
The people behind these scams have raised the bar. I too quit using eBay
and PayPal because life is too short to live in constant state of paranoia.

on the purchase for a printer. But this person was an idiot and because of
me their membership was cancelled. If you're the one selling, how can you
get ripped off if you get the money you want for the plane? eBay is much
safer than you think, I buy all the time.

Any of WHAT merchants? The press release didn't say, Mark.
And the breach was when clueless merchants gave their ID
and Password through the spoofed email link even though
Paypal says (when you sign up) that they will never ask
you for your info via email. They also send email to us
to tell us of the spoofs and how not to fall for them.
What more could you ask?
Paypal is solid. (But I have a separate Paypal bank account,
JIC.)

I also have bought stuff on Ebay and so far so good. Whether buying
*or* selling I always check feedback. If you're worried some buyer
will stiff you on a winning bid you can post this disclaimer:
"I reserve the right to reject bids from bidders with negative
feeback. If you do have negative feedback and wish to bid inquire
first. Payment must be received within 10 days after auction ends or
item will be relisted and negative feedback posted."
One guy who had negative feedback and I allowed to bid was late in
paying for the item and I emailed him. Said he was waiting for his tax
refund check. I gave him an extension and he did pay, but he has
subsequently been banned from Ebay, but not by my doing.
