I'm a huge open-wheel racing fan. More so F-1 than IRL or CART, but the
Indy 500 is a tradition that transcends, somehow beyond the bullshit in
IRL and CART's managements.
Crazy cars and now a pretty woman too. CAN it get any better than that?
I know that Formula 1 is waaay faster and more exciting, and I'm pretty
much up to date on drivers, equipment and points/standings but there are
no chick-drivers! Now that IRL has one: http://www.danicaracing.com/
I want her to win just because she's cute as a bug..... and I know very
little about much else when it comes to drivers, equipment, etc.

And now Robbie Gordon is whining because Ms Patrick is 105 pounds
lighter than he is, so has an advantage. It should be interesting, to
see if IRL forces her to add 100 pounds of lead in her next race, if
she does well in this one.

This race was definitely about gambling on a fuel strategy. You may
have noticed that the winner ran out of fuel on his victory lap.

I can't watch much open wheel racing after watching Nascar. Open wheel
just seems so tame in comparision.
I don't watch much racing because each race is a two to three hour
investment of time. I will probably watch at least some of the Indy 500.
My time is better spent woodworking and similiar pursuits.

My dad and some of his buddies at work did it a few years ago to another
coworker.
Add gas everyday for a week or two, but then they started to siphon some
out. Really messed with this guy's head!

It's very interesting living in a border city and having your metropolitan

all through school here, as many of her friends were across the river and
were involved in French immersion classes, so learning to speak French
became very important to her.

Those cars are simply unfriggin' believable! A few years back I got
to Montreal, and the acceleration and nimbleness of those cars just
has to be experienced to be believed. TV doesn't do them justice.
I also like visiting the local NASCAR modified oval tracks (Stafford
and Thompson), as the competition is pretty tight with 1960's
technology. <G>

Like a lot of folks, I haven't watched an Indy 500 in a lot of years, but had
this one on because of her...
The paper predicted on the day before the race that an extra 15 to 20% of folks
would tune in to see how she did..
I think she said that the car weighs about 4,000+ ??
What's cool to me is that besides being a 5' 1" cutey, she's a freakin' rookie
and came in 4th... that lady is one hell of a driver, and only 23 yrs old..

Well, not quite. But they diddled the qualifying rules last year, and
it didn't work: Ferrari found strategies to overcome them. The rule
changes this year seemed *specifically* designed to make those
strategies obsolete.
>But, I agree, this years rule changes sure seemed to have made a huge

Or at least some tire companies. Bridgestone has been behind the curve
on tire design for several years now, but the Ferrari-Schumacher
combination was good enough to make up for it. This year's rules
played right into Michelin's strength: their endurance racing
experience.
If F1 was actually serious about reducing costs, they would have gone
to a "spec" tire a decade ago.

I've never been able to watch F-1 live. The cutting edge of automotive

But I catch as many as I can on TV.

include: If you have a red car with a prancing horse logo, your wing has
to be smaller than the blue car with the star on it...
But, I agree, this years rule changes sure seemed to have made a huge
difference to some teams.

Well, Fred, 3 of my daughter all took French immersion, one of them
still is. It's very handy here in this 'officially bilingual' country.
My SWMBO (doesn't rhyme with BMBO) gets a few of her favourite groceries
in Port Huron. I still do the odd Lowe's or HD visit and stop in and get
a pretzel at Birchwood.
My sister, who lives in KC (Olathe) flies into either Flint or Detroit
so I'm across that bridge often.
Sarnia is my favourite place on earth. It has everything... just like
Port Huron.

Yo Max!
I have been to quite a few F-1 races, Montreal, Detroit, Watkins Glen
back in them days..Mosport... and Zandvoort and Spa.
I drove the Nurnberg Ring (off season). They let you do that for 20
bucks back then. Maybe they still do. Sunday the European GP is there.
Gonna be a full day for me with Indy right after....*G*
The last few years have been a frickin' drag. But what do you do? Schumi
was/is probably the best ever even though he ruined a few years of F-1
for me. I mean, it's downright boring. race after race, pole position,
lead, win. Over and over...grrrrrrrrrr
BUT... it looks like we're back. I thought Alonso was going to be a
runaway, but Kimi is looking great! Trulli and Ralphie are looking good
too. And Weber is a bit of a surprise. I wish Jacques ( with a 'c' )
would work a little harder.
Before I die, I want to watch a race at Monte Carlo.
Here's an interesting tidbit of info. They had a CART race on the Gilles
Villeneuve track in Montreal two years ago. Many people have had the
barroom discussion who is quicker, the CARTs or the F-1's.
The F-1's do the track in Montreal a full 6.5 seconds faster than CARTs.
Now that is settled.

I know you're not. BAR racing was banned from Formula 1 for two races
because the buggers hid a small fuel tank. During the last pit stop,
they'd fill it again so their minimum weight was right again, but a few
laps prior to the stops they were lighter than the legal limit. Clever.
But not clever enough.
I sort of reminds me of a story a guest told on Johnny Carson. I don't
recall who it was, but he had played a really cool prank on his
neighbour. His neighbour had bought one of the very first Volkwagens in
America. At night, he (the guest) would add a few quarts of gasoline to
the tank of the Volkswagen. Every day.
His neighbour was bragging to the whole neighbourhood about his
incredible fuel mileage..like 200 mpg.
Then he stopped adding the fuel.
The neighbour was all over the dealership. What was wrong? He used to
get 200 MPG, now it's burning WAY more fuel...

That's the way it should be. I believe it was Ferdy Porsche who said
that the ideal race car would self-destruct as it crossed the finish
line.
The history at Indy is to punish cars that are superior because of
design or other technical innovation. For example when the turbine
cars would clearly dominate, the air inlet was restricted to make then
uncompetitive. The tire wars are gone, everyone runs
Bridgestones...sorry...Firestones. No more push rod Chevys, etc.
So I predict that there will be a rules change to make the cars have a
minimum weight that includes the driver. A 100 lb advantage is huge.
Danica is very good, very pretty and this time very lucky. I told my
wife before the pit stops began that I bet Danica would stall the
engine. Her inexperience also caused the spin that took out other
cars and luckly left her in the race. She could have well DNFed right
there. She also is with a very good team, with excellent hardware and
excellent coaching.

Some sanctioning bodies weigh the car with the driver, as not only is
the total weight judged, but the left to right percentages.
Fat guys can bias an oval car more to the left. <G> The extra
overall hit is well worth it on a short track.
Small-time cars have also been known to "lose" some weight from the
right side during the race. This weight is usually lead bars slid
inside a hollow frame component, blocked with wood wedges, and held in
place with a safety bolt. On more than one occasion, the bolt has
been "forgotten", causing the weight to unfortunately fall out during
a race. <G> It took some bodies years to finally require a rescale
after the race of top finishers.
I'm really not making this up.

put Sterling, Mario, Juan, Jimmy Clark, the two Stewarts, Jackie and
Tony, A.J. and a few others together in identical F1 Ferraris and see

She's certainly got a great p.r. machine behind her. For somebody who's
never won a car race to get the kind of attention she has is pretty
remarkable. Saw some "news" story about last night, they called her a
"champion race car driver" again, pretty good p.r. for someone who's never
won a race.
I hope she does well, and then gets back to where she belongs, in Champ

I've been a fan for at least 60 years. Been to the Indy 500 5 times
although not lately. I can remember the radio days of Sid Collins, "The
Voice Of The Indianapolis 500". I've watched Jimmy Clark, Graham Hill,

I'm also a fan of F-1. Alonso and Raikkonen looking good this year after

Yeah, me too. I haven't followed Indy for years now but just happened to
tune in during the last 40 laps and watched her outstanding performance.
Good for her! She did some masterful professional driving that
challenged the best of the experienced drivers. (Wonder how it might

having to dial it back to conserve fuel - widening that distance she
held during the final laps when traffic was holding the others back.)
I don't think the cars weigh anywhere near 4,000 pounds - I'm thinking
more like half that.

Yep.

I grew up around racing. My dad used to build flat-head Fords for
Roger McCluskey (http://www.champcarstats.com/year/1973.htm) when he
was starting out here in Tucson. I gravitated into the automotive
machine shop biz for a while until I got smart enough to go into EE.
I did drag racing and was the crew chief on a dirt track
super-modified (a sprinter with a full roll cage) until my driver was
killed in a light plane crash. I used to go to Riverside for the GP
races and saw the likes of Sterling Moss (the best race car driver
that ever lived IMHO), Dan Gurney, and all of the big name USAC guys
when they ran stockers on the road course.
But I've got to agree that NASCAR (live) is awesome. I've been to the
last two Phoenix races and didn't realize how good they were until
seeing it live. Being a guest in the best suite at the track isn't
bad either.
But, that said, give me a wingless sprint car race on dirt anytime.

Get a DVR with a hard drive and record the races. You can skip
through the 4 minute commercials and watch the rest a 2X speed until
something exciting happens. I even do this on the races I see live,
that way I can see what I missed.

I think you will find if you do your research correctly that the
"small fuel tank" was actually inside the main fuel tank and is more
correctly termed a collector. Its sole purpose being to admit fuel and
not allow it to escape into the main volume of the tank so enabling
the vehicle to continue running its engine when the fuel level is low
and during conditions of high G.
Collectors are very, very, widely used in motorsport, indeed the very
week the BAR team were banned ATL, a major supplier of fuel tanks
carried an advert for them in the UK based Autosport magazine, just as
they have done for years. Odds are that EVERY team were running
identical systems and still are. The difference now is that the
collector will have a small bleed hole and be raised slightly above
the base of the main tank base. This permits the fuel in it to slowly
return to the main section of the fuel tank so that when the tank is
requested to be "emptied" at post race scrutineering no residual fuel
remains in the collector.
It was also conclusively proven by BAR by the use of telemetry and
refuelling system records that they did not at ANY time run below the
minimum prescribed weight limits, just that when requested to drain
the fuel tank for a post race check they removed fuel from the main
tank as they and other had done on hundreds of other occasions but not
from the collector which is basically inaccessible without a major
dismantling effort.
So cheats they are not. The rules and procedures were proven to be
seriously at fault, as they still are. Indeed the passing of the car
at post race scrutineering meant that they were unable to protest any
other teams fuel systems which it can be safely assumed would ALL fail
similar checks. The subsequent appeal by the FIA some days later
enabled sanctions to be taken on an unequal basis against a single
team that had been conclusively cleared of any offence by the post
race scrutineers. The fact they had to be banned by the FIA is just
typical bully boy tactics that can be traced back to when they came
into F1 and attempted to run in dual colour schemes.

Nope. That's racin'. Of course in open-wheel cars trying to spin
somebody out isn't done. Most, but clearly not all, of the crashes
are due to slower, non-competitive cars and drivers that probably
shouldn't be on the race track. A.J. Foyt IV leaps to mind.
This is not to say that they are unskilled, just that there are three
or four teams with the depth (deep pockets) who can afford limitless
hours of development, practice, back-up cars, etc. and dominate. The
number of driving positions on these teams is limited so other good
drivers are left to drive inferior equipment, with limited practice
time, so-so pit crews, and so forth.
