Well about 2 weeks ago i brought home a new to me jointer. Needed a lot of
clean up and TLC. Had been sitting for a few years and it showed. My
daughter (9) wanted to help clean it up. So i gave her a block of wood and
some 320 sand paper. Sprayed the jointer surfaces and let her start sanding
on it. She went thru the 320, then the 400, then 600. Got the tables
cleaned up nicely. While she was doing this i was hitting the table saw
with some 600, some minor rust spots. Then i burned in a coat of wax into
the table top. She wanted to do the hand polishing of tha table saw, so she
did. Looks great by the way.
Well i am not sure how tomorrow could get any better, but we are going to
try.

It will take one hell of allot of sanding to do any damage to a cast iron
table with a sanding block and 320 grit, and finer, paper. It is the first
thing I do when I get a new machine, or do a good clean up on one. I know I
am too lazy to sand that long!
When I bought my Jet jointer I was not impressed with the tables, then I
realized I have not "prepped" the tables. A quick sanding with some fine
paper and the wood just glided along.

Try sticking some steel wool under the ROS with a spritz of WD-40 to
really make those tables shine!

Now that that is done, the next thing is to check the table and see how many
hills and valleys have been sanded into it. Shiny doesn't mean much. Flat
does.

That's a bit sexist, isn't it?
<NOMEX=ON>
Maybe you could design a "girl" thing together. Knick knack
shelf, shadow box, or a closet clothes hook thing featuring the
newly polished tooling.
Kids are the greatest thing about being pops.

Wow, she's got lot's more patience than my 9 year-old son. He'd have
made it half way through the 320 and decided that he knew how the rest was
going to turn out, then left me to it. :-)
