The 'baltic birch' was a Soviet-era collaboration between forest harvests in
Latvia and high-quality plywood manufacture across the border in Russia.
Panel sizes were metric ("5 feet" square, but really 1.5M square...)
With the Baltic states joining NATO, there was a brief hiatus when that
product was unavailable...

ApplePly is a domestic equivalent <http://www.appleply.com/>, and mostly available
through normal distribution channels. And in 4x8 size.

My supplier offers BB in 60x60 and something similar in 4x8 sheets. The
4x8 sheets tend to be much more expensive per square foot.

1/2" 60x60 $19.95 1/2" 48x96 $32.95. About 25% more expensive per
square foot.

I build 99% of my drawers sides out of 1/2" BB.

Baloney. If it's birch, then it might be Baltic birch. If
it's some other hardwood, then it's whatever kind of hardwood
that is (cherry plywood or maple plywood or whatever - bearing
in mind that the inner plys will be poplar).

> If it is marine glue and spruce or something - might be marine ply.

Also baloney. Spruce marine ply is all but non-existant
today. If it's marine ply it'll be one of the mahoganies.
(noting that you can find softwood ply marked "marine", but
it won't pass BS1088 or other marine plywood standards).

I'd second the "baltic ply" - much of it from Finland and available in
4X sheets. It is my building material of choice for cabinetry or
anywhere strength and stability are required. - like jigs.

thought it might be marine ply but i looked at some marine ply and it
looked nothing like that

put it to good use for a steady jig and it is steady

There ARE "solid hardwood" plywoods with other than birch top plies
from specialty plywood companies - some of which ARE Baltic Birch.
Langevin Forest products supplies Baltic Birch with Cherry, Red Oak,
Maple, and Black Walnut top plies in 4X8 sheets.Sometimes sold as
"European Cabinet" stock.

There is other 17 ply product out there that looks like baltic ply but
has "shitty" center plies - called China Ply.

Is it hardwood ? if so Baltic.

If it is marine glue and spruce or something - might be marine ply.

I have 3/8" steel that weighs like 1/2" steel due to content.

I have 1" ply that is normal pine ply. Just thick.
Two 24" squares. :-)

So in wood, the content of the material (wood) is important and
the type of glue is important.
