OT: Giving in

So today I gave in to getting older, I bought a 28 inch monitor. I
waited to long, now I can read without leaning foward pulling my
glasses down so I can read with the right eye. (near sighted and far
sighted)

Grumpy at the admission of this aging thing.

Wow! I guess you don't have to worry about keeping the lawn trimmed.

Getting old isn't for sissies.

They're going to try another cardiac ablation on me tomorrow (third
try in thirteen months). The doc said not to expect a miracle but
it's the next step before getting more aggressive. It's going to be
an interesting day. I have to be there at 6:30 tomorrow morning and
they're forecasting freezing rain. The hospital is downtown, about a
mile from the NCAA Championship game will be tomorrow night. ...and
Trump is going to the game. It's going to be fun getting home (my
wife *hates* driving in Atlanta and it's going to be a _real_ mess).
My procedure may be the least painful part of the day.

Getting old isn't for sissies.

TOO big does not work so well, as it requires too much head movement. Or
requires sitting further away, which kind of defeats the purpose of a
larger screen.

For computer use, a TV in the 40"-50" range works better. Get a 4K UHD
model (3840x2160 pixels) and you have the equivalent of four 20"-25" HD
(1920x1080) monitors. Makes it easy to use multiple windows at once, or
just increase the overall font size so that I do not need my usual
reading glasses. Look for a model with even lighting at low brightness
or you'll eyes will tire quickly.

I use a 50", and find it is almost too big, as the upper part of the
screen is a little too high for comfort. I either use smaller windows
on the bottom, or have to lean back to read the top. It is kind of nice
for reading the digital edition of the local newspaper, leaning back in
the desk chair, feet up, with my morning coffee. I can easily read two
facing pages, each of which is about 50% bigger than the print edition.

Both of my eye doctors like to remind people that they should *hope* that they get
cataracts.

Their reasoning is that assuming you live long enough, everyone will eventually get cataracts.
The only way to avoid them completely is to die at a younger age than most of us want to.

Good luck. Here's something that might work out for you:

A late start on the procedure and the slightest, nothing to worry about
issue which causes them to say "You know what, why don't you stay overnight?
We'll bring in a cot for your wife."

Of course, as they're getting ready to send you home, you could just tell
that you don't feel so good. ;-)

Seriously, good luck. I hope the procedure finally resolves the issue.

Nifty. Nice view now?

About May of last year I gave in to my other half nudging me on a good
local deal and I too got a new monitor. I now have a 43" monitor! It
took some time for me to get used to it (it's huge on my desk) but now
I'm loving it. I got a new AppletV for it and can flip over and watch
all kinds of 4k video. Aging like this I can handle. ;)

>Best of luck to you. One of my childhood friends (met nearly 50 years ago!) has that same procedure about every 18 months for about 6 years. It is traumatic (I can't imagine)even though they tell him they do it all the time. Eventually, they got him back in time.

Thanks. The doc didn't really expect this to work this time. He said
he'd try again as long as I understood that it was a long-shot. It's
not the classical A-Fib, rather A-Flutter on the opposite side (left)
side, likely caused by the MAZE procedure[*] I had three years ago.

>However, hard head wouldn't follow the doctor's advice. He wouldn't exercise, wouldn't lose weight, and wouldn't eat healthy foods. Now he has a pacemaker. Worse, his cardiologist used to be my Mom's. He told me that if my boy had followed his advice for the last few years he probably wouldn't have needed but a couple "restarts" and the other problems could have been managed with meds.

I've lost a lot of weight and walk 10-15 miles a day (6-7 on a
treadmill). The problem with the meds is that they lower my pulse to
a dangerous point. Even today I was down around 42 for a while.

They did a cardioversion ("restart") so I'm back in rhythm right now
but he doesn't expect it to stay in rhythm long. The next step is a
pacemaker. They can either just use a pacemaker to raise the "floor"
rate and put me back on the anti-arrhythmic drugs (forever) or go in
and kill the AV node (the tissue that conducts the pacing pulse from
the atria to the ventricles) and replace it with a 2-wire pacemaker.
No going back from that one.

>Like I said, good luck! Follow the Dr.'s orders (unlike my boneheaded friend) and hopefully all will be well soon.

Thanks! (to everyone) I'm trying but I've been going down this road
11 years already.

I have always had a difference in my eyes, far sighted in the left,
near in the right. So glasses are a extension of me, the left is now
20/20, so could fix the right but I would then need readers. Also with
"good vision" I loose medical coverage, so no lasik for me. Night
vision is still good, hearing good despite tinnitus. Most thing I hurt
when younger are reminding me from time to time.

INTERESTING link. Thanks for that. Sounds like you are very well versed in what is going on... guess I am too used to my hard headed buddy.

On the bright side for him, when they arrived at the end of less invasive procedures and he had his pacemaker installed, it changed his life. He went back to work, has a lot more energy and feels better all day long.

Once more, good luck!

Good luck. My wife had it done twice so I have an idea what it will be
like for you. It does help.

Best of luck to you. One of my childhood friends (met nearly 50 years ago!=
) has that same procedure about every 18 months for about 6 years. It is t=
raumatic (I can't imagine)even though they tell him they do it all the time=
. Eventually, they got him back in time.=20

However, hard head wouldn't follow the doctor's advice. He wouldn't exercis=
e, wouldn't lose weight, and wouldn't eat healthy foods. Now he has a pace=
maker. Worse, his cardiologist used to be my Mom's. He told me that if my=
boy had followed his advice for the last few years he probably wouldn't ha=
ve needed but a couple "restarts" and the other problems could have been ma=
naged with meds.

Like I said, good luck! Follow the Dr.'s orders (unlike my boneheaded frie=
nd) and hopefully all will be well soon.

Best thing I did lately was getting my cataracts removed. Close lens
on left, distant on right. No more leaning forward to read the small
print on the screen. No more dirty eyeglasses to clean or mis-lay.

Thanks. The first two didn't work (well, they did for five or six
months). I've also had the "Maze procedure", which is the
mother-of-all-ablations (I think it's the reason I'm having trouble
now).

Update: No freezing rain on the way in, Monday morning. Didn't start
until 8-9:00. I'm OK, though majorly hung over today (I'd forgotten
what that felt like). I didn't have to worry about waiting the few
hours waiting for the vein to close. I was out the entire time (plus
an hour). I woke up in a hospital room, so it didn't take long to
figure out that they were keeping me overnight (so missed the game
traffic, too). I'll take the two little wins.

Good luck with all of that, especially the medical procedure.

If you are grumpy now we can look forward to "in a rage" in a while; aging
does NOT improve.

response times and resolution and which connector technology or
which brand or how much to spend

I hear you. I'm not sure whether to feel cheated or blessed myself.
Most of my life I had better than normal vision. Both clarity and
speed. I could pick out an animal on a hillside a mile away. I could
read street signs two or three streets away. I had issues with color
because I could see variances in shade others couldn't, and I had
incredible night vison. It only took me 5 minutes to adjust instead of
20 and I could navigate across the desert by starlight easily on a clear
night.

At about age 40-42 I started needing reading glasses. Now at almost 52 I
wear trifocals because I can't get used to progressives. I guess for
the first half of my life I was blessed in that regard, but now I feel
particularly frustrated to have to wear glasses. I guess every person's
journey has its tough things to deal with.

Atleast I still have decent night vision, but it does take longer to
adjust now. I can still run the river at night in my boat by starlight
as long as some moron in a pontoon boat doesn't light me up with his
spotlight. I have been known to scream profanities at somebody tied off
catfishing as I blow by because they thought it was a good idea to blast
me with a million candle power beam.

No need to ask when you are sure and can read specs and understand
them. Also the mortgage is paid, as are the balances on the credit
cards, no auto payment.

It is 3 hours with a 50 inch deck, so trimming is optional.

I try to educate myself on what they're about to do to me. ;-) I
told the heart surgeon, no I don't want to know the details of what
you're going to cut but I want to know _everything_ about what I can
expect, and alternatives (though he's the one who sold me on the MAZE
procedure).

I think I'm coming to that conclusion, too, but I have to do more
talking with the "electrician" [*]

Thanks again.

[*] My cardiologist explained that if I were a house, he'd be a
plumber and the electro physiologist (a specialty of cardiology) would
be the electrician.

FWIW, I was thinking about a bigger monitor but when I looked at the
prices there wasn't that much difference between 27 inch "monitor" and
a 40" 4K TV. And the TV works just fine as a monitor.
