Turning segmented cane problem

I'm turning a segmented cane -- the kind that has three sections joined by
brass couplers. The problem I have is attaching the brass couplings so the
grain is aligned on all three pieces. The only thing I've come up with so
far is to drill the hole large enough to slip, rather than screw in one end
of a coupling, then glue it with epoxy, but am afraid this would make a weak
joint, particularly with a cane. Any suggestions?

I think you are right on the issue of strength. What I would do is
screw the couplings into their respective pieces, check the grain
alignment, and painstakingly pare or sand down the shoulder of one piece
until it rotates to the proper alignment. The most you would have to
remove is the width of less than one full turn of the thread, so you are
not going to affect the length noticeably. But you will have to test fit
it numerous times.
