Looked at the thread about the Ryobi OSS on sale at HD, and decided
to see if the closest one to me (about 10 miles) had any.
First looked in the yellow pages of the local phone book. Two
Lowes were there, but no HD. Hmmm. OK, checked the white pages. Found
HD listed there.
OK, called, and no answer. Called again. Same. Repeat several
more times. So, tried operator assistance, and got the same number.
Tried calling several more time, still no answer.
Dug out a couple more phone books. The two Lowes are listed, but
no HD.
I haven't been in a HD in a lonnnng time, and obviously that was a
good move. I wouldn't mind getting one of those sanders, but I'm not
about to drive that far just to check.

Is this the same guy that complained a few months ago about someone
looking for a place to buy wood in Houston in this conference? Surely
looking for HD in Clayton in a global, galactic newsgroup is not the
same thing. ;-)
Complain? No. Not being able to figure out why someone doesn't
look in their local phone book, maybe.
The problem is not "finding" a HD, I know where a lot of them are,
so I can make a point of avoiding them. The problem is, calling a
particular one, and no one answering the phone there.

*MUST* have been the FM band.
On AM, there is a _famous_ station in, I believe, Juarez, Mexico, just across
the river from Del Rio, Texas. Famous for, among other things, running at
way, *WAY*, higher than licensed power levels. And an 'overmodulated' signal.
Vague memory says callsign was XELO, but I'm not sure.
You would pick em up even if you were _not_ tuned to their frequency.

"No Services" _is_ the exact wording. Not just in Montana. Its a US DOT
standard for Interstate Highway signage.
>take to mean "If you're bleeding, hungry or out'a gas, don't bother with
>this exit. There ain't no-one here."
Not quite, but close. <grin>
"Services" are "gas", "food", "lodging". And they have to be within some
relatively small number of miles (5?, 10?) of the exit to be considered.
"No services" means "no place to sleep, eat, or get gas" anywhere 'close'
to the exit. Don't expect to just drive off and find something. :)
Hospitals are treated entirely differently. If you've got a certified
emergency room -- and/or a 'trauma center' rating -- you'll get one of
those blue 'H' pointers at the nearest Interstate exit. Unless there is
some other facility that is closer (although it may be at a _different_
exit.)
I've driven that stretch of road many times. Lots of places to get gas.
Some of the "food" available in restaurants along that stretch could
only be described as such by virtue of the fact that you _could_ horse
it down if you were about to die of starvation -- not that you would
want to otherwise.
I was usually driving west from Texarkana through FW/Dallas on to
Nogales. Pretty country -- if you like desert. Still a bit wild and
beautiful to see.
I used to think that the towns depicted in "B grade" modern cowboy
movies were fictional representations out of a directors nightmare --
now I am not so sure. Maybe it's just the area near the highways
though... :-) Nice people as well in that area. Just stay polite and
respectful and they won't shoot you -- much.

Guess not. :)
But you must be in someplace of size then ... we have Wally-World and a
pitifully inadequate Best Buy Home Center although they did build a new
building so may beef up just a little...

And in many western states, there are also exits marked "Ranch Exit" or
equivalent...these, in addition to there being no services are what they
say--local roads only to one or more ranch houses which <may> be 30
miles or more from the exit.

Hell, Hardee's was first here. Then MacDonald's. First Big Mac went broke: it's
now a dry cleaning store. We then got all the greats, a successful (there's a
term for ya) MacDonald's--I don't know if that's Mc or Mac, and don't much
care--then Burger King and Taco Bell and Long John Sliver's. Taco Bell faded
out in four years. LJ's continues to do minor business. Or it's converted to
Arby's I forget which.
In the meantime, we continue to hope for a second and third good restaurant so
we don't have to fight the crowding at the one that exists. Oh,yeah. They did
build a Wendy's, in the same shopping area as the LJ, Big Mac complex, and
there is a Huddle House there now if you want 24 hour a day breakfast.
Easier to eat at home...and that from someone who absolutely loves a good
restaurant.

the lowes in garner is at 70 and 401. before you get that far maybe a
mile or so before there is a HD on your left. its a fairly new one
only a couple years there i think.

Hear hear! I just never have been able to get into HD at all. They have a
few things Lowe's doesn't, but the hassle of getting them makes it rarely
worth the effort. I also hate the color orange, which doesn't improve my
warm fuzzy feeling when I'm in there.

Ah, hell. Hot orange and badly laid out parking spaces. I've been in HDs in
three states, and all the parking lots are laid out by a demented gerbil. The
one in Parkersburg, WV is the absolute worst, but in Roanoke, with half the
land in the western world to choose from, they managed to make entrance and
exit a slalom game. Less than ideal with a well laden vehicle.
But colors? My first wife's favorite color is/was blue, which triggers problems
in Lowe's, even after 20 years.

Where I had access to both (E TN), the difference wasn't in <what> was

Around here, it's also what is stocked. My well controller has
gone out about 3 times in 20 years. Check HD, they have ONE model,
about one in stock, which is not even close. Go to Lowes, they have
about 6 models, several of each in stock. And, one is exactly what I
need.
PLUS Lowes has clerks who can actually tell you (or take you to)
where what you are looking for is. HD doesn't even come close on that.
No, Lowes isn't the greatest in the world, but so far it's topped
all my HD experiences.

The guys in the yard at our Lowes usually couldn't find the washer
we had bought so we were upgraded to the next larger for the same
price. Huge tub, with only 2 of us, usually, to fill it.

My local hardware guy runs this kind of place. Smart folks, who pay
attention. Good selection, with answers on what I really need. He's my
first alternative, and not only because he's 4 blocks away.
Lowe's is 20 miles. Buying a washing machine from them was an interesting
experience, but it beat the heck out of Sears.

The local Ace Hardware is great, even the teenagers know where most
of the stuff is, and if they don't they will find someone that does.
That's always my first stop. But, they don't carry well controllers.
It's about a mile. Got 3 Lowes about 8-9 miles each. One HD about 8
miles. Got the first well contoller because it was a Sunday, and no
plumbing supply open. Now keep going there for them because they're
reasonably close, have them, and are open on Sunday. It's rather
surprising how many things go when everything else is closed. But,
anytime I can, I shop in my home town first.

That varies from store to store. If I go tot he Worcester stores, HD has
the edge. In the Manchester stores, Lowes does. At that location they are
right across the street from each other.

Ideally. phone customers and in-store customers should get equal levels of
service. If a choice has to be made, the customer in the store should get
better levels of service versus a potential customer on the phone.
You'd probably be upset if you went to the store and all the help was
talking on the phone. To be fair, every time I have called Home Depot
around here, they have a live operator who answers promptly.
I used to work retail and juggling the phone and customers in the store
was a real challenge. Customers in the store get upset if you stop to
answer the phone and phone callers don't want to have the phone ring
forever. I worked in a brand new computer store and our department had 4
employees. We should have had 10 employees for the first few months.

The first Lowe's just opened here in Minneapolis. I went there the second
day they were open. I didn't think it was anything special versus Home
Depot.
Prices were higher than Menard's and Home Depot in general. The store was
very clean, but so was every Home Depot on the second day.
I won't be back unless they have something nobody else sells. Lowes is 10
to 15 miles away and there are at least five Home Depots and as many
Menard's closer to home.

Yes, I'm aware of each. There's also a Lowes at 42 and 40, and

Lessee
Home Depot:
Prince George 1069 miles
Grande Prairie 997
Lowes, only in Alaska:
Fairbanks 600
Wasilla 643
Coming to think of it, they also have HD in Fairbanks and Wasilla. Don't
go there often either...
But we do have a borg-like Home Hardware which carries mainly General
and General International large tools and the whole gamut of smaller
power tools. Plus the employees are easy to find and usually know their
stuff.

They've got signs under the exit along the lines of "No Services" which I
