Watch case, bookshelf, and other ideas

x-no-archive:yes

My wife says I cant start on any more projects until I build her a
small bookshelf for the office upstairs. I have gotton two rough cut
red oak boards about 8 feet long and 10 inches wide. Are there any
plans or ideas out there for somethign for a newbie like me?

Also, I found a picture of a watch case I liked that held 11 of your
watches. (I dont have that many...yet!) I thought it seemed cool.
ANyone build anythign like that or know of simple ways to build it?
Just curious!

Just wanted to get your post archived. A bookshelf? Just look around
for designs you like and make one. There's really no fancy joinery
required. Butt joints with support blocks would be more than enough.
Some diagonal piece on the back or a thin ply back would keep it from
racking.
Look at Rockler or Lee Valley if you want fancy pegs etc. for moveable
shelves. You can finish it with whatever you have - oil, shellac,
varnish, poly, waterbase poly, lacquer, spray, etc. Stain it if you
want, but you don't have to. Past your personal preferences, it really
doesn't matter.
I'm just starting a rocking chair, and I did order a plan, but it
wasn't very detailed and I didn't like everything about the design. So
I found as many pictures as I could of mission style rocking chairs,
measured a bunch of chairs, decided what I liked and what I didn't, and
re-did the plan to my own preferences. A bookshelf is far simpler than
a rocker, so just do it and see how it comes out. If it wobbles or
sags, add supports as necessary. If you really want a plan, you can
google "free bookshelf plan". Don't make this harder than it is.
Good luck,
Andy

The best place to look is the library. They'll have plenty of books
about building bookshelves. You could also check the woodworking
magazines for ideas (The library will probably have back issues of
those as well, or check the web).

If I was you, I'd build the bookcase out of plywood. It's a lot easier,
and fewer things can go wrong. Build it out of oak plywood and use the
red oak boards you already have to edge the plywood edges and for trim
(if you want to get fancy).

Unfortunately not. The bookshelf is the one project that no one on the
internet has been able to conquer. Many have tried, all have failed.

Have a try at it, maybe you will be the next pioneer of woodworking?
