I'm trying to use my Porter Cable 4112 for the first time and am very
confused. It came with left and right edge guides numbered 1, 2, 3
and 4, but no instruction as to how to use them. Are they for
different thickness materials? Are they to set the distance from the
drawer edge to the first pin? I thought I did that by sliding the
guide one way or the other. The instruction book never mentions the
four different guides!
Check the notes under figure 1 in the 4112 manual. Note 5 tells you
about #1 and #2. I imagine that other template instructions will
mention the other 2 sets.

The manual does tell you which edge guide to use for which operation:
#1 -- 1/2" half-blind dovetails
#2 -- 1/2" rabbeted dovetails
#3 -- 1/4" half-blind dovetails or 1/2" box joints
#4 -- 1/4" rabbeted dovetails
Look in the "box" at the beginning of each section.
