Hello,
I'm looking for a supplier of 1/10" veneer. I want to build a set of
four cafe chairs from Jeff Miller's book on chairs. I don't want to
resaw forty pieces of 1/10" walnut, I figured I would use walnut for
the outside of the chair rail and something else for the rest of the
laminated rail.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Larry
Larry,
Maybe a call to the Hardwood and Plywood Veneer Association is in
order. Their website is: http://www.hpva.org. Perhaps you can call
them, tell them what you're looking for, and they can refer you to a
"custom size" veneer supplier.

FWIW, I am dismayed that some people come here w/o doing any research. For
example, "Anyone know where I can find plans for a picnic table?" I do my
best to research first and then ask -- though I have found sometimes after
asking that my searching skills were lacking that day and people here are
kind enough to make that clear. That being said, "162,000 hits" is not a
fair reply. 159K of those may be for ready-made furniture made with "wood
veneer". And, based on David's reply, .1" veneer is not typical. Anyway,
just one opinion.

How important is it that it's 1/10"? 99% of the commercial veneer I see is
1/40". Could you adjust the design to accomodate 1/40"? What about just
laminating four sheets of 1/40" together? If it's cheap enough...
BTW, I always get my veneer on eBay. Shipping charges, which are why I
don't buy wood on eBay, are reasonable, and the prices are terrific. Let's
see... (searching my favorite veneer vendor)
You want something gorgeous?
Flat Sawn Figured Circassian Walnut Veneer
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2339531444&category=unde
fined (all one line)
This seller always has gorgeous veneer, and in huge lots. This one is 315
sqft in three bundles. It's got 9 hours left and is current going for $75.
I'm betting it won't go much higher than $110, if that, then account for
shipping (with this large lot, maybe $35?). We're talking less than 50
cents a sqft, maybe much less. At that price you could glue four pieces of
1/40" veneer together to make 1/10", and you're still paying less than
$2.00/sqft for some VERY pretty veneer.
Look for more items by that seller, he's got some great deals. 402 sqft of
Curly Black Walnut that looks like it might sell for about the same price
as the one above.
I've never been able to afford to buy at the quantities that this seller
has, but I love looking at his stuff. But I've had great experiences with
other sellers on eBay and will never buy veneer anywhere else. But if you
want this guy's veneer, buy it quick because it's all at about 9 hours
left, and it will be a couple of weeks before he puts more online. And no,
I really don't have any affiliation with the seller -- I just like drooling
over his merchandise!!
Hope this helps!

I guess I didn't explain myself clearly. I need to laminate a one
inch thick rail for the seat of the chair. I don't want to glue up 40
pieces (x4 rails=160 pieces) of veneer to get that one inch. It sounds
like too much work to me. Yes, I know I could laminate in groups of
four or whatever, but it would be a lot easier if I could find some
1/10" pieces of veneer. I have to bend this piece of wood to fit the
seat rail pattern. Each piece is about 48 inches long. My experiments
with a 1/10" piece show that it works pretty well for bending it on
the form. I think 1/8" is too thick...
Any other veneer sources? I checked Ebay but I didn't find any 1/10"
veneer. Most of the veneer doesn't even mention thickness so I know it
is too thin for my purposes...

I've done a lot of searching for .1" (2.5mm) veneer but have not found
a supplier. I did see one reference on Google for some Canadian
company that sells it but I didn't get a name or a website address.
I've looked at a ton of boat building websites but I still haven't
come up with a source. I suppose I should just bite the bullet and
resaw and plane my forty pieces but it would save me a lot of time if
I could find someone who sells 1/10" veneer. This Jeff Miller guy
found it to build his chairs but he didn't give a source.
I've looked at Constantine's, Certainly Wood, etc...
Maybe I should buy 1/16" veneer, that is much more common. I'm
certainly not going to buy 1/40".....
Cheers,
Larry
