NO idea where you got that number, but:
Ignorance is bliss, too. There will be spam as long as there is income
to be derived from it, and everyone keeps their heads buried in the
spam. Some pretty big boys have gone to jail since last summer and the
only thing happened was it opened more space for the rest of them
because most people are too lazy to care.

Yeah, if that worked more than .01% of the time there would be no spam.
Reporting them is a simple way for you get your frustrations out.

Fine, go ahead and do that -- just do it quietly.

What I am talking about is exactly what you said. IT will never disappear.
The @abuse addresses simply give you that feeling that you actually matter
and that it will help. Probably .01% of the reports have any effect.

Spammers use throwaway accounts so how does reporting them hurt them
in the pocket book?

Going after they're site host and credit card access is more effective
than an account used for posting the spam.

No, it makes you part of the problem. Ignoring spam will only allow it
to increase. Burying your head in the sand will not prevent the enemy
from fighting right in your own back yard. I report each and every spam
I come across, some automatically, some manually. I mention it now and
then to try to encourage others to do the same. Spammers only
understand one thing: they must protect their pocket book so hit 'em
where it hurts.

Spammers are paying for space somewhere, even if they're spamming
through proxies. Get those accounts closed, they lose any suckers ti
might have gleaned and have to pay for yet another space. Ad infinitum
until it no longer pays to spam or they go to jail as so many already
have.

Next step: do so silently.

I have spam filters in place on my newsreader that have prevented me from
seeing *any* of the posts you're complaining about. From my perspective, that
makes *you* more of a nuisance than the spammers.
