UNDERWATER CAMERA for SCUBA

Hi. I want to buy a camera for underwater photography when I dive. Any
suggestions? Is 35mm OK for this? Would I need special housing for the
camera?

Go to the library, take an underwater photo course, rent some cameras in
different format......

hi
there are several different ways u can go, re: 35 mm, u can buy a 35 mm
Nikonos V camera which doesnt need a housing or u can get a 35 mm SLR camera
and buy a housing to fit it. but before u go out and by a 35 mm SLR land
camera, first u need to make sure that u can get a nice housing, several
different UW companies make housing for SLR example Sea and Sea or Ikelite.
Second u might want to take a UW photo class, rent or buy a cheap snap
camera before u spend the $$$ for a nice system. the sea and sea UW set up
i have for my Nikon N90s total for everything i need was about $7000.

u might want to get into digital equipment its the new thing now days in UW
photos. take care

Go to the following site:

http://www.splashdowndivers.com/photo_gallery/underwater_photography/index.html

This was put together by Peter Schulz who is an extremely bright guy,
and only recently took up underwater photography. His pics (elsewhere on
the same site) prove he knows whereof he speaks.

I hope your checkbook is up to the strain you are about to put on it.
Underwater photography is expensive, somewhere in the range of 4 times as
expensive as land photography of comparable quality.

A 35 mm camera will work, but the trend is moving toward ditigal. There are
some cameras designed for use without a housing and some that require one.
If you're going with a housed camera, I strongly suggest you shop for the
housing first. They are usually as expensive or even more expensive than
the camera that goes in them and are not available, off the shelf, for all
cameras. Once you have a good idea on what housings are available, shop for
cameras that are compatable and offer whatever features you prefer. If you
want good photos and true color, you're going to want at least one and
probably two strobes.

None of this is cheap.

That really depends. The best way to find out is to take your camera on a
dive - if the photos come out then you don't need a housing. If they don't
then you'll need an enclosure... ;-)

If you already own a 35mm camera, visit Ikelite for a housing. If not, the
Nikonos is always good. Why did you ask in a woodworking group?

If he wants a housing that floats that would be a good place to start ;)

Go digital.

Check out the SeaLife Reefmaster. Good piece of kit. I have one of
their original digital cameras, the 1.3 megapixel version. The
cameras are even better now and the housings, strobes, etc were always
good.
