OT: Saving Messages / Threads

My newsreader is MS Outlook Express 6. I save interesting messages and
threads by dragging them into a local folder. However, in the local folder
the messages are "flat" -- there is no thread organization. At least I
haven't figured out how to do it.

Are there better ways to archive selected messages from threads? Perhaps a
different newsreader?

Thanks.

On the few occssions I have saved specific posts, I did it by
forwarding them to myself.

Netscape does allow you to save a newsgroup message(s) to a separate
subfolder of the Inbox and to sort them by threads.

In Outlook Express you can also click view/sort by/subject

Or just click on the "Subject" column heading and it will sort that way as
well. In fact, you can quickly sort any lists in OE (or Outlook) by clicking
on the column heading (subject, From, Received, etc.)

You can create (I suspect OE allows this, Netscape does) a half dozen or
so folders for general threads and place them into that. They're still
not in thread order but you can seperate drawers from tools from turning.

You can create numerous folders and structure them in netscape. Helps
keeps things organized.

Then it's a simple matter of right click-copy to-pick your folder.

Where the data is actually stored, I imagine, is dependent on your OS. I
can tell where to find it with NT. 9x? ??

I sound like a broken record on this subject... Xnews is an excellent
free newsreader.

Xnews is to Outlook Express as a digital cell phone is to two tin cans and
a piece of string.

It takes a bit of time to learn how to use it, and the documentation
is in geekspeak, but the time and aggravation you will save in the long run
is worth the couple of hours of effort.

You can download it here:

If you click on the 5th icon at the bottom of the screen (the folder
with a paper in it), the message you are currently looking at or
highlighting will be transferred to the archive. You can look at the
contents of the archive by clicking, at the top of the screen,
Folder>Archive.

I'm pretty sure it will automatically thread your archived messages,
even if you are only saving a few random ones from a lengthy thread. One
sure way to find out... try it!

I downloaded it & tried it. Haven't figured everything out yet... <g>

Does it let me save, say, 5 messages of a 27 message thread, preserving the
"threadness"? If so, what does it do if some "generations" are skipped?
For example, saving the parent message, skipping all the replies to the
parent (children), saving two grandchildren messages, and one great-great
grandchild message? (The late, great newsreader 'Virtual Assist' let you
manually set the threads on saved messages.)

Agent was the best for this IMHO. I had tons of stuff saved. It's one of
the only things I miss sometimes about Windows.
