Plantation shutters can add a unique look to any home. Historically,
they were used for protection against the elements, as well as against
intruders, but in recent times, have been used to make more of a
design statement. But what are they?

John, I think you missed the point.
These are actually the newer "spamtation shutters", not the ones you
were talking about.

However, they would only be plantation shutters if you actually had
a plantation.

The click-collector neglects to mention that if you put them inside
then they don't work and play will with curtains and don't really do
anything that a set of mini-blindes don't do and if they're outside
then they need to be kept latched open as well as closed or the wind
bangs them around, and sometimes they get loose from their latch
regardless and bang around. Friend of mine until a couple of years
ago lived in a house built in 1789 that had real shutters. He finally
got sick of them banging around and screwed them open. Of course he
in 40 years never lit a fire in any of the six fireplaces for fear
that they'd smoke, so one has to assume that he's a little weird.
