Q about Engineering (steel) Squares

What's that little recess / nick / indentation for? The one in the inside
corner between blade and handle?
Izzt for a pencil? Izzt so you can sneak in a feeler gauge right up to the
edge? Izzt like the uvula?

It is for clearance. If you are checking squareness of two surfaces and
the edge where the two surfaces meet together
is not beveled, a small lip or burr would make checking difficult.

And all this time I thought it was a pivot.
