I have a detached shop that is roughly 50 feet from my house.
Does anyone know of an affordable option for remote smoke detection that
would give me warning in the house? If I ever did have a shop fire, I think
the place would be gone before I knew about it. The power to the shop comes
off a big breaker in my house, so something that sent a signal back through
the electrical line would work great (if there is such a thing).

hooks them together.

Thinking outside the box, I may have a cheap alternative. There is a
wireless doorbell extension that works over a pretty good distance. One
end (in the workshop) is a microphone that communicates to it's other
unit by radio frequency when a loud noise is picked up. The other end
(in your house) chimes to let you know. If the microphone pickup was
right next to your smoke alarm in the shop. It would set off the
doorbell end in your house. As long as the chime is different that your
doorbell, there shouldn't be any confusion. I use one to let me know
(in my workshop) when there's someone at the front door. I was lazy and
didn't want to run more wires. The doorbell sets it off as do my two
terriers. The wireless doorbell is sold at Lowes. You would have to
read the directions and see if the maximum distance fits your situation.
Another way would be to remote the buzzer in a smoke alarm by soldering
some wires and running them from the workshop to the house.

There are alarm systems with X-10 home-automation connections
which could alert you inside the house, or you could put an
external horn on the smoke alarm in the shop which you could
hear from the house.

past history of that question.

I installed an alarm and smoke detection system in my shop before I ever
moved a tool into it. Went to a local place called "The Security Store" ...
might want to see if they have an outlet local to you. It is not tied into
the house system, but you would have to be dead not to hear the siren going
off.
Did a $2K "professional" installation for about $350 in parts myself ...
mine is probably more "professional" than theirs.

and tell them your problem and they tell you exactly the parts you need.
Fantastic tech support/info - they really know their products and some of
their security and automation products can get complicated (for me), mixing
