think "expansion". you still need a small gap when you get done filling
in the majority of the gap. usually about 1/4" is sufficient for most
floors, depending of course on the size and the variation in humidity,
blah, blah, blah for your area.

Is there a reason you can't use a wooden filler strip or standard
threshhold trim? Just a thought...
