Pickled finish

I plan to pickle some shop cabinets to match my Ridgid machines. The wood
wil be baltic birch and some MDF. Would you all recommend a wash coat of
50/50 poly/ mineral spirits or MinWax conditioner? I thought it would even
out the absorption of the tinned paint. Yes? No? Not necessary but not
harmful? Just plain stupid?

Not necessary on the birch. Not sure whether you intend to attempt
pickling the MDF, but I'd do some tests first - it might not give you
the look you're after.
