Sorta OT: having surgery Monday

For several months now, I've had some difficulty moving my right thumb. (Yes,
I'm right-handed.) In the last two weeks, it's gotten much, much worse. My
family doctor's January diagnosis of synovitis was, at best, incomplete, and
according to the hand specialist I saw last week, I have a pinched nerve in
the carpal tunnel, which has resulted in significant atrophy of one of the
major muscles in my thumb. [OBWW: it so far hasn't impeded me much in the
shop, except that I have a hard time picking up small objects, and it's nearly
impossible to use a screwdriver or any type of thumbwheel adjuster. But
day-to-day life is another story: I can't open my hand wide enough to pick up
a glass of water, and it's very difficult to write, among other things.]

I'm having surgery Monday morning to correct the condition which is pinching
the nerve.

Please join me in praying for a successful surgery, and the speedy recovery of
the full use of my hand.

Thank you, and God bless you all.

I feel sorry for you having to have surgery. I was going to have a
fistula (dialysis access in the arm) in January. The Dr. got half way
into the surgery and my bp dropped to 36/16. I was closed up and
surgery would happen another day. Twice after that I was scheduled for
surgery but no go. Then finally, I went into surgery and had a graft
put in. Later I had to have another surgery because it clotted closed.

Hmmmm, I wonder if my writers cramp problem could be related to this (40
years of keyboarding) or is a result of the occasional numbness in hands
and arms from the broken neck and spinal fusion?

Doug:

Former significant other had this done on both
hands - sequentially. She had a bad experience
with the anesthesia in the second procedure but
the surgery went well and her recovery was
quite good. The surgery gave her back most of
the use of her hands and reduced to a minimum
the "discomfort" (doctors and dentists refuse
to use the P-word - PAIN!) she'd been having.

Will try and work with my fingers crossed
for you. May you heal quickly and catch up
on all your reading in during your recovery.

BTW - constant use of the TV remote is not
advised :)

Remember, keep it light. Be sure to ask the doctor if you will be able to
play the piano after the surgery. (I'm sure you know the punch line)

BAD,

I had a joint replaced in the 80's by Dr. Jack Tupper out of Oakland.
He was considered the premier hand surgeon in Northern California at
the time -- he was even on "That's Incredible" for having reattached
four fingers on a woman who had gotten caught in a paper shredder.

He ran me with a general, but a replacement is a bit complicated --
and as they used to say "That was then, this is now."

I doubt that he is still practicing medicine, but I'm currious about
your Bay Area Doctor's names and their locations.

Yes, of course -- the only thing is, I *can* play the piano *now*. Or at least

Good luck Doug and it is best you get this done ASAP. A friend of mine
ignored his symptoms as long as he could. Then one day he slammed his
fingers in a car door and noticed that it did not hurt. Fortunately no
broken bones but the doctors insisted on performing the procedure the next
day.

I'm not much on praying Doug, but I do wish you a speedy and
full recovery. FWIW, several of my neighbors have had similar
surgery in the last year or so, and every one of the surgeries
was a success. So I think your odds are pretty good.

I'm on it!

[ God really seems to be answering my prayers for others these days, so
expect the best. Me, on the other hand, is pretty damned sure I'm going to
get whacked for something soon. :) It's that Catholic upbringing, can't
shake it... ]

the first doctor i went to wanted to use a general. I
changed doctors (the first guy turned out to be a prima
donna according to those in the profession) and had my
surgery done with a local. that's much better for the
patient, when at all possible. NEVER choose a general
unless it's a major operation that demands a general. I've
had 3 majors and after one of them I got sick due to the
anesthesia.

You got it! Good luck to you ... it's hell getting old. DAMHIK

I am afraid I am looking at the same thing in the not too distant future on
my right hand.

I didn't get the opener on this one, but I hope and pray Doug is fine, quickly.

Best to you Doug and our prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. I
promise I won't pick on ya until you're fully recovered and can chuck a
keyboard like a lance (as you usually do....;-)

Take care,
