Whew, glad mine are shorthaired. The little bit that does get on 'em
is bad enough.

unfortunately I allergic to but dogs and cats (but not wood thankfully)
so my shop cat is a little bit "stiffer" than yours. But he does keep
an eye out for strangers. :-)

More or less. My son's dog. I open the shop and she will often
crowd in ahead of me. Small shop to begin with, my son has a bunch of
stuff stacked at the door, and the dog makes it even smaller. Or, she
comes in while I'm concentrating on somehing, and first I know of it,
she'll stick her cold nose on my hand, or her tail hits me. Startless
the Hell out of me every time. Then she likes to lie on the floor,
always right where I need to be next. Medium size dog, but seems to
grows several sizes when she lies down. The sound of the scrolll saw,
drill press, or something like that, wont move her. But the router or
saw cranking up chase her out. Not unusual to go out and see her
napping on the roof of my truck. Ever have cat tracks all over a car?
How about dog tracks?

I can't let two of my three hang around me, because they're wanderhunds, and
they go wanderin'. Freckles (some kind of white hound mix) is my girl, and
she's always no more than 10' away from me, unless there's a cat on the
loose, or a bee. She loves to eat bees. Stupid dog. She doesn't run
after people, and stays in my yard, so she's my shop dog.

She prefers to loiter just outside the shop unless it's raining. If it's
raining, she wants me to leave one of the doors open. Doesn't like being
closed up.

Bubby would be a good shop dog too (black and brown hound dog mix), and he's
quickly becoming my boy. I didn't think I had room in my heart to love two
of these things as much as I love Freckles, but I do. Unfortunately, he's
got the wunderhound in him bad, and he goes all over the place if I don't
watch him.

Boomer (border collie mix) is SWMBO's dog, mostly. He's our water lover.
Only dog I've ever had who goes swimming every single chance he gets. He
and I get along fine, but I'm not his person, and he's not my dog. That's
just how it is.

Bubby and Boomer usually go down to Mom's house to play inside the fence I
built for them, with Mom's six dogs. Mom has 3/4 of an acre, so it's not
exactly a hardship for the pups.

All three of these critters were dumped on a Sunday by people who didn't
realize the pound was closed. We found Freckles first, then Boomer a
couple years later, then Bubby just this year.

I really didn't particularly want a third dog, but a whole litter of these
guys showed up. SWMBO woke me up babbling about the puppies that a
neighbor had found. I walked down the street, picked Bubby up, looked him
in the eyes, then sat him down and walked home. He followed me, and he's
been at my side ever since.

I love dogs.

O'Deener: That's one sorry-ass looking dog you got there. Is it some
kinda Chihuahua/Naked Mole Rat mix?

I would'nt bother finishing the dog house - these failed genetic

I am so sorry to hear that. I too have a Golden. He is been a wonderful
friend/listener/hunting buddy/etc.... I know the tight bond that can be formed.
Something really special about Goldens. They need to breed some that can live
20 years. They just never live long enough. Every dog I have owned has ripped
my heart out when they die. I say I will never own another, but somehow a cute
puppy will find his way into my house. Enjoy her memories.

My shop is between the house n garage; 2-3' doors to the garage....when my
American-Eskimo isn,t chewing on my wood scrapes or playing fetch on his
own, he lays at the front of the garage towards the driveway protecting me
from would-be-invaders...lol.....he also like to sing (howl) next to me when
i,m running the router. Its kinds funny, I usually don,t see him, because i
gotta pay attention to what i,m doing, but i sure can hear him. Before going
in, I usually gotta pick up 5 or 6 lil-pieces of scrap wood he hauled outta
the scrap box to play with. Dogs are fun......

Yup. Here's the "Dog" sleeping on his house-under-construction. Some

Mr. Cramer,

Neither. Over the years I've posted nearly 800 questions regarding
basic house-framing, the first one being: Hey, half the nails in this
box are facing the wrong way! What do I do? The obvious answer was,
"Hey dumbass, those nails are for the other side of the house."

Having done a fair amount of house-framing as a youngster, I adopted
this basic tenet: we don't use no steenking joinery! I suppose were I
to timberframe the feline domicile, I'd do it with some snazzy giant
M&T's, but this is your basic stick-frame house, with the sole plates
screwed to the base (3/4 marine ply). The siding is to be cedar
(rabbetted edges, don't have a set of match planes for T&G), and the
roof is asphalt shingles, complete with sheet metal drip edge.

I'm allergic to cats too, which is why I'm building the house... so
they can stay outside and not get eaten by coyotes.

A timberframed cat house... now that'd be something.

Only the frozen ones. Of the four cats who call our place home, the
two young ones are dedicated shop cats. They follow me around...
well, like dogs. I dunno why some cats are indifferent and others are
simply in heaven when "hanging outside with the folks," as we call it.
Even the sound of a screaming electic routah doesn't faze them.
They're content to lay near the bench and get covered in shavings.
It's funny. Someone "working," is enthralling. I guess I'm just an
animal lover, cos I know we'll get a dog some day, if only to enjoy
the fun of watching the dog hassle the cats.

Nope, and they get it right back too. Cat people think this is a bad thing,
but I just don't get cats, or cat people. I've done the cat thing lots of
times, but I don't think I ever will again. Kittens are cute, and cats

Sadly, we had to put our canine family member down last week ... a Golden
who made it to 13 1/2. She was already blind and deaf, but that didn't slow
her down, until suddenly one evening last week she could no longer get up.

We still hear her tags clinking on occasion, and every so often I still
catch a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye ...

Very sorry to hear that. I know how hard that can be. Lost a few in

I have a Chow who likes to root around in green oak shavings around the
lathe. She just likes the smell of the stuff. It is a real pain to get
the cips out of her coat though.

Whenever I put off sweeping up the shavings, I pay for it in terms of
grooming time.

I've been wondering: can you actually make T&G joints with a matched
set of planes? I mean, how would it work? I mean, when you make them with
a router, everything lines up good and the joint fits together, but if you
were doing it by hand, how could you possibly keep the T from wandering all
over the edge of the board and stuff? Same with the G? Do you know what I
mean? Can hand tools actually do the work of real tools?

Gotta love 'em. Mine are both Great Danes. My 5 month old pup, Rocky, has
the wanderlust in him too. Afraid to put the door up out there for fear
he will take off and not come back when I call him. Still has some

Great looking dogs! My beagle-sheppard mix runs for her life whenever I
turn on the power tools. She doesn't mind being in the shop when I'm doing
neanderwork, but she get's too wound up and won't stop running around so I
generally don't torture her by locking her up in the shop with me.
