Center gauge question

I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me why there is a very
small slot at the bottom of each notch on a center gauge. Number 82
is photo of one at the site below:

I also added a few more other objects, if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Rob H.

Correct

This one isn't a close hanger maker.

> 82 - drill guage

Thanks for the info on this one in your previous post.

> 83 - ashtray? mosquito coil holder?

Neither of these is correct.

> 77 - key ring?

This one is not a key ring.

> 78 - looks like the mechanical arm from an arcade game/toy machine

It's similar to those that you mentioned, but this one has another use.

> 79 - nutcracker?

It's not a nutcracker.

Thanks for the posts.

Yes, If you unscrew the lower part of the hand-set, you'll find this mic.

> 78 is a surgical tool.

There is a surgical tool similar to this, but that's not what this one was made for.

> 79 is a tool for installing snaps or grommets.

This one isn't for snaps or grommets.

Yes, it's a wire spring relay from the phone company.

Also, thanks to all who answered my original question about the center
gauge notches.

Greg has it right. The small cut also prevents accumulated crud from
interfering with the measurement.

It stops any imperfections in the tip from preventing the sides from
registering correctly

#82 is actually a lathe centering gauge, aka 'fishhook'. It's used to
set up a toolbit perpendicular to a rod in a metal-cutting lathe prior
to chasing threads. The side opposite the 2 small V's is placed against
the rod, and the toolbit is then lined up using one of those V's. I've
used one of these many a time to cut threads.

83 is a mic from an old telephone.
78 is a surgical tool.
79 is a tool for installing snaps or grommets.

clearance. without the notch any tiny bit of grunge would throw the
point off center.

Number 81 is a multiple contact telephone system relay from the 50s. The
twisted pins in the top photograph plug into the system.
