Habitat for Humanity has a store in Pasadena with remnants/extra bits
donated and left over from their projects. Might have some used lumber there
too.

Figures a charity outfit would have a store in the highest rent area in
Southern California.

You obviously don't live in Southern California. The Pasadena area isn't
even close to having the highest rent for commercial space. As it happens,
Habitat uses the back half of a warehouse type of building for their store
and the front half for their offices.
Since you obviously have a problem with either Habitat for Humanity or
charitable organisations in general, I certainly hope that you never find
yourself in need of help, the hypocrisy might kill you.
