That is per ton. So take a full load, add the weight of the truck
itself and you get what you'd expect. 2-8 mpg? I dunno.

We can make that work, right? I like that.
Another thing to consider:
* Seven major railroad companies reported the following for 2007:
1,770,545,245,000 ton-miles of freight were moved
4,062,025,082 gallons of diesel fuel were consumed
That works out to be almost 436 ton-miles per gallon (435.88)
Trains today 85% more efficient than in 1980
The Association of American Railroads is boasting an 85.5 percent
improvement in fuel efficiency for their trains since 1980.
* Railroads offer significant public benefits in moving our nation's
freight. A single freight train can take 280 trucks off our nation's
crowded highways. In addition, a train can move one ton of freight an
average of 436 miles on a single gallon of fuel: That's a home run in
terms of fuel efficiency.
* A train can move one ton of freight 206 miles on one gallon of fuel.
A truck can move one ton of fright only 59 miles on one gallon of
fuel.

You're a liar. I don't have to know you to know that, I can tell by what and
how you say it. Just because you say you contribute, most certainly doesn't
make it true. Just that fact that you think only very the very poorest in
your US population should receive publicly funded health support states what
kind of person you are.
Count up all the number of times you've said "why should I pay" and it's
easy to see what kind of person you are. You contribute nothing and are only
interested in what you can take. You are greedy, selfish and entirely self
motivated. It's plainly obvious to *anyone* seeing what you write and what
you talk about.
In fact, it's all you talk about in this newsgroup. You certainly don't
contribute anything in the way of woodworking content. All you're here to do
is troll simply because a significant portion of this newsgroup has a high
level of intelligence and knowledge.
Now you're going to tell me how you helped someone two days ago in ABPW
right? One
woodworking comment in six months does not mean you're contributing.
You are a liar with a really screwed up sense of what is. I know it and so

I do like the idea of throwing all garbage into active volcanoes.
From a purely quantitative standpoint, the nuclear waste we produce is
akin to a fart in a hurricane. Miniscule and easily dissipated.
How about that? Finally a topic I know something about.

I have a feeling that I have a better understanding of the US systems
than 90% of Americans.
Also, as your version of the US insists on 'managing' everybody's
business in countries all over the world, I feel I am completely in my
rights to comment on what you're doing to the planet, the world
economy, *MY* border with you guys etc.
WE, as lowly Canadians, supply a lot of energy, food, lumber,
Blackberries, Celine Dion and what have you, so I think a bit more
respect is appropriate. We are your largest trading partner.
Just because *I* live 5 minutes away from Port Huron, Michigan in an
area on the planet we call Canada, that doesn't automatically make me
ignorant, uninformed, uneducatated, or substandard. Your view and
approach to my being a 'Canadian' just shows exactly how pompous and
arrogant you are.
What *I* see, is what your bed-mates have done to your wonderful
country and other parts of the world over the last eight years, so my
suggestion to you, is to go into hiding for a while during which time
I hope you come to grips with the fact that you run with a bunch of
losers. Put away that poster of Sarah Palin so that the blood may once
again flow to your brain.
As the US influence has done a great amount of positive things in
history, planet-wide, so has the negative things permeated the fabric
of global influence. For people like you, Mark, to only take credit
for the good things, and that all bad things are from 'lefties', shows
the size and blackness of the blinders you wear.
THIS Canadian has a few American friends, but just like extremist
Canadians are difficult to communicate with, so are the American ones,
especially when they have their heads up their respective asses.
Blindness and assholeness knows no borders. And I am sick and tired of
your "he's Canadian, therefore stupid" bullshit.
Andy,
I was comparing him to CG only because he is so likable by so many. There
are hundreds of thousands who voted for him on that characteristic alone. I
think Obama is a brilliant man. I just didn't vote for him for many reasons.
I am confidant that the terrorists will push President elect Obama's buttons
more so than they would have if McRage were Pres..
Are you still kayaking? I would love to be out on lake Powell right now
paddling around, away from all this political bantering.
Some of my best friends are hippies.

Unless things have changed when I wasn't looking, Canada's central bank, the
Bank of Canada, is a indeed corporation, but one wholly owned by the
Canadian government, with the sole power to issue money, unlike the screw
job our politicians have foisted upon us with the Federal Reserve Bank.
If US citizens were less ignorant, and had any idea what the principle of
fractional interest has done to them down through the years, it would cause
a bloodbath revolution.
Any idiotic brouhaha over presidential politics amounts to a popcorn fart in

You're not my debating partner, you're just some asshole from the street who
has learned how to couch most of his insults into the crappy prose he slings
in this newsgroup. My manners are fine for those whom I respect and those
who respect me.
I'd sooner trust someone who swears and is crude when it's appropriate than
I would trust a scummy little weasel like you who admittedly contributes
nothing here and takes whenever he can in other facets of his life. You are
a greedy, self-serving flake of the worst kind and 95% of the people here
know it.
You *might* even get someone to actually admit his name online (which I have
yet to see) that actually supports you in your rampant accusations of evil
and theft. However, the limited support you've had among all the criticisms
tells it like it is. And when it comes down to it, even the worst and most
vile dregs of society in the past and the present have had supporters. So,
you posting one dubious message of support which still has to be proven
(frequent action on your part) is completely worthless.
You don't know me, you've never talked to me or had any dealings with me,
yet you've called me evil and a thief. Those who do know me know that I'm
honest, I don't lie, cheat or steal. You chose to challenge my integrity by
calling me these things solely on the basis that I've received publicly
funded medical aid.
You started this flame fest asshole and it will be my pleasure to point out
to anybody who will listen that you are a lying piece of decrepit shit. If

and, to get a better understanding, I am well aware that most of those

Damn, I can't wait until this election is over. Both candidates scare me in

What an utterly racist viewpoint. Substitute the word "black" for "white"
or even "asian" or "hispanic" ... see how that sounds. So much for liberal
tolerance.
P.S. I didn't vote for McCain OR Obama (shudder), but voices like yours
are just a little too close to the jackboots of the 1920s, 30s, and
40s to be be left unchallenged.

I suppose it is better to deal with the megatons of ash, sulphur,
vanadium, not to mention gasses running the spectrum of poisonous to
caustic. And I mean megatons. Daily. The impact on the environment by
the mines, the people who suffer working the mines, the slag heaps and
so on and so on.
We have learned to manage our nuclear bombs and now we're whining
about a bit of manageable spent fuel?
Compared to what we greedily slurp up in terms of energy, the waste
from nuclear stations is the last of our problems.
Of course if you keep screwing around with those light water pieces of
crap... what do you expect?

Yep, didn't think you could address the question. It's always the
intention, never the results that count for liberals. When their failed
policies, lack of results, and disastrous unintended consequences are
pointed out, the only thing they can muster is bluster and insults.

It was Christ himself who said that. This addressed voluntary charity. He
did not say that the state should make someone who has two coats give one
of them to another person who hasn't worked for it.

You realize that by standards of that day, you are beyond rich? The
disciples themselves, who were by no means rich asked, "how can anyone then
be saved?" They considered themselves rich. The whole application of this
event has nothing to do with electing people who will make the rich become
poor or bankrupt our nation.
You should also look at a couple more fundamental precepts before you try
delving into doctrinal dissertations when you apparently don't have the
required knowledge:
You shall not steal. That includes finding someone who will do the
stealing for you by enacting laws to take from someone you believe to have
more than you in order to benefit yourself.
You shall not covet your neigbor's house. You shall not covet your
neighbor's wife or his workers or his animals or anything that belongs to
your neigbor. i.e., we are not to look at what others have acquired and
scheme to identify means of taking those things away from them. That
includes supporting people who will enact laws to do that for you.

Whose plan takes $ from one particular citizen? And what particular
citizen does it go to? The "profit from natural resources" pool (big
business would sound about right) is indistinguishable from other tax
revenues pool.
Share it? You mean collectively? Like everyone gets a piece of the
pie? What does that sound like?
And by the way, Alaska is either #1 or #3 in handouts from the Federal
Government, depending on which calculation you make (subsidy $ per
person: #1, or total subsidy $: #3).
So basically, a good chunk of your tax dollars go to folks in Alaska.
Or one of them, if that makes anyone feel better.
Of course that's supposed to build bridges and such, but they have so
much left over that every Alaskan got a check for $3,200+ last year.
For doing nothing. Not even breaking a sweat. How'd you do?
God I'll be glad when tomorrow's over.

Smart enough not to want to destroy the coal industry.
Smart enough not to bemoan the fact that the constitution doesn't say what

Smart enough not to bemoan the fact that the civil rights movement didn't

Why don't we take a different approach here and start evaluating people on
past performance? Which party has controlled the only state in the US
suffering a real recession? In cities with the worst crime, poverty, and
unemployment who has been in charge? How well have all the Trillions of
dollars from the "Great Society" and "War on Poverty funds worked in
eliminating poverty? What has been the effect of those programs on black
families? Yet, the guy who supports all those failed policies is viewed as
the next great hope of solving the problems by doing more of the same. I
guess we aren't supposed to judge the advocates of these policies by their
results, just by their intentions.
Funny though, the leading candidate's brother lives in a hut on less than
$20 per year. His cherished Aunt Zuitini has been living as an illegal
alien in a Boston slum for the past 5 years (theoretically unbeknown to the
candidate). But he did take her $200 [illegal] campaign donation.
Funny how the leading candidate's web site will accept credit card
donations without verifying that the card and name match. Can you say, "we
have a way to get donations and circumvent the finance rules"?
Yeah, great candidate ya'll have there.

So the wholesale destruction of the integrity of our voting process
doesn't bother you? Don't give me that "Bush did it BS". That was purely
BS -- the stuff that happened in 2000 was stopping Gore from stealing the
election by counting, recounting, and divining voter intention until they
got the result they wanted. ACORN registering people multiple times,
fraudulent voters, and dead voters don't bother you if your side is the one
that benefits?

The tax situation won't save or break the auto industry. What
the next administration needs to do is not give the industry
a handout, but to work with them via loans or incentives to

Keeping the population divided on ideological issues is one thing.
Things went off the rails when it became "for us or against us".
I have always been of the opinion that any rational human being can
see across that dividing line and see how certain views would be
beneficial regardless what 'side' you're on.
Unfortunately, too many are locked in (fanatical) to the point they're
blind.

A search on "money spent on negative ads" yielded exactly 0 on those

A general internet search on a similar string netted some blog

As a Canadian I'm sure that you don't fully understand the US government

First our society has to agree on what "green technology" will be
adopted.
Although I think it may be too late at this point to invent "green
technology". Glow in the dark technology has a long track record and
works.

He who has two coats should give. Not he who has none should take,
and the government isn't supposed to get into it at all.
A conservative will give a poor person the coat off his back. A
liberal will pass a law requiring that the government give poor people
coats and make sure that there's an exemption so that they don't take
_his_ coat to give them.

What you don't think the Democrats had anything to do with our GREAT
COUNTRY'S financil crisis? Chris Dodd? Barney Frank? Leaders on BOTH sides
should be ashamed of themselves. Hell maybe even imprisoned.
There will be a lot of dissapointed Obama voters that won't get what they
were expecting. Many uneducated Obamaites are expecting things like free
healthcare! Heck I never even heard Obama offer that.
I heard afew people say they would finally be able to make their house
payments. If they can't make them right now they might be in trouble before
he is able to make that much change in their lives.

Methinks you're missing the point. In the lexicon of the Obama Fanboyz,
"charity" means stealing from some and giving it to others under
threat by the government. Anything that smacks of personal choice
in giving is to be overruled by the strong arm of the Federal government
because ... well ... His Holiness, The Price Of Peace, Lord Obama
knows what's good for everyone else (like all tin pot dictators).

Actually, I didn't quite say what I meant here. So let me be more precise.
We - all of us - are forced to live inside the lines of the government
we elect. Since Canada forces its citizens to pay for healthcare,
availing yourself of the care isn't wrong. What *is* wrong - and why
Upscale is having public temper tantrums - is *defending* such forceful
policies and not acting in every reasonable way to change them. You've seen
him (and many others) defend this forced theft as a moral good. And
*that* - the defense - is evil. It sanitizes stealing as a virtue.

All spreading of wealth beyond that needed to run government to its very
small Constitutionally mandated limits is wrong. And, since you appear

"the bottom to the top". This is a leftie talking point this is - in

It redistributes wealth based on some social engineering calculus.
It insists on state control of education and health.
It makes decisions on what is "good for the group" even if the individual is harmed.

The destruction of this country was precipitated by its overweening

what they have not earned for themselves and invented economic fantasy
to try and get it.

No, the feel-good, do-good, spend-as-much-as-you-want politicians and
their greedy constituents brought us to where we are. And we are nowhere
near the lowest point since the depression. That will take Obama and
his fanboyz a few years to accomplish.

That would mean *anyone* who used the force of a government gun to
take something away from their neighbor is dishonest. Notice that I
have no objection whatsoever to voluntary group insurance. If people
had a choice about joining a nationalized healthcare plan there would
be no moral foul. The foul is is the "making you do it whether you
want to or not." When government uses force to, say, stop a murderer
it is doing so legitimately: It is preventing someone from harming
another citizen. When government itself redistributes wealth *it* is
harming someone to benefit someone else. It's very much like a Mafia
protection racket in that regard.
Poor old Upscale. He feeds at the public trough, swears like a 13 year

I am interested in not being violent, threatening, or a thief. I am,
in fact, none of those things. Too bad you can't say the same, as your
worldview is entirely predicated on theft. You just don't have the
integrity to do your own stealing - you hire government goons like
Obama to do it for you.

What did the wreckers do a few years ago when a fellow who shall
remain nameless (apparently lived in the area of a large, partially
enclosed body of water) acted out trollishly just like this TD (Too
Dumb) nimrod? We shunned him.
No one answered him. No one acknowledged his posts, No one even
acknowledged his existence. Isn't it time to take the same path now?
C'mon, it'll be easy to do. It's not like he has any woodworking
knowledge to impart. Why legitimize his presence. All of the unopened
messages in my reader are either from him or some other tough nut.

It wasn't. I don't mind vigorous disagreement. I mind childish cursing
and constant accusations of being a liar (which I am not). Anyway,
good riddance. He can go back to defending theft and living off you

Almost all of these were directed to abstract classes of people when
describing a political viewpoint. I have also made it repeatedly clear
that my problem with Obama is a policy/position one. He is *political*
vermin, but I have NO opinion of him personally. With a very few
exceptions, NONE of them are directed at you personally and/or any
other person in these threads. The main one that is directed at you -
and deservedly so - is that you are a cheapshot artist. When your
methods are exposed for what they are - theft of some to give to
others - you howl in pain because, well, the truth hurts. I wish you
and the rest of defenders of communism no personal ill will, I just
have contempt for your ideas. In your particular case, I also have
contempt for your methods as you are ill mannered and rude, resorting
to all manner of specific personal attack when you are cornered (which
is most of the time). So, let me explain this one last time -
assaulting an idea, a class of ideas, and/or a class of people who
hold such ideas as wrong/horrible/foolish is one thing. Throwing rocks
at your debating partner personally because they've outmatched you is
rude. Learn some manners.

You know, it is funny, Obama raised $600 MILLION for his campaign and he
saved it all for himself, turning down Harry Reid when he asked for some
help for the congressional campaigns. All that money, a significant amount
most likely illegal (we will never know the real number because the
campaign web site purposely turned off credit card verification checking),
yet despite all of the bleating from the left in past campaigns about
the "obscene" amounts of money spent on "buying" the presidency, not a peep
this election cycle. Come on lefties, a little consistency would be nice.
