Iona Soldier Recovering From Iraq Explosion
March 2, 2006
An Iona man has returned from Iraq. However, he's back prematurely after a
roadside bomb exploded on him. It left him with a cracked skull, injured
eyes and missing an arm.
Every day, images like these are broadcast throughout the world. They tend
to feel otherworldly, removed - it's only when you meet someone who has
experienced it first hand that you can be transported, showing you what life
is like over there.
For Dan Gruber of Iona, he lived that life for six months, until one fall
night --
"It was dark at that point. The moon hadn't come up."
He was out patrolling an 80-mile stretch of road when he saw something
suspicious in the road.
"It was an intersection that had received a lot of IEDs before," Gruber
said.
He went to check out what looked like a rock and then it happened.
"I found myself flying through the air and I knew immediately I had been hit
with a bomb."
The pain wasn't immediate, but his arm was missing.
"My eardrums had been blown out so it wasn't loud. I didn't feel any pain,
couldn't see at the time. Just knew an IED had gone off and I landed on my
head and knew my arm was gone."
He's been recovering for months now and still has to return to Walter Reed.
The pain hasn't stopped.
"Electrical shock, like sticking your finger in a light socket. Sometimes
just throbbing pain," he described.
And he still feels his missing arm, like it's never left him -- kind of like
the pride in what the U.S. is doing over in Iraq has never left him.
Gruber still plans to be in the Reserves. He would like to see himself as a
teacher at the base in Utah.

You're...not...doing...this...to...influence....people...
Maybe you want to take another run at that line because, obviously,
that is exactly what you are trying to do. If you're trying to bring
attention to something it is for a reason, unless you're just a
mentally disturbed man (jury's still out - you may just be venting to
make yourself feel better for a short while). The only reason that you
could want to bring attention to the deaths of these people is to stop
future deaths. The only way to do that is by influencing people. So,
do you want to try that again?

You know if you could communicate in a fairly mature manner, some folks
could agree with part, or much of your campaign. I guess maturity is asking
too much.
I miss Al Kyder. He must be vacationing in Sun City Arizona. I here they
have a great wood shop in the community center!

Like I said, no stomach for it. Can't stand the real facts, would rather
live in your own little twisted world without the facts bothering you. Sad,

I see you've now met the resident r.ww troll. This one has lasted longer
than most -- it's either too stupid to move on or is able to survive on the
meager feeding and poking that it gets periodically when it escapes
peoples' filters or a new set of folks try to understand its reasoning and

What did I say? that was too Mark & Jose the Bloodlust Kiddies! They're
still selling you the Saddam was behind 9/11, mass graves, WMD'S etc etc all
promoted by exiled ex-patriots that if what they had said about Saddam was
remotely true......... they themselves wouldn't or shouldn't be alive today
to tell everyone the lies and bullshit. He would have wasted them by they're
own accounts.................but ohh they left Iraq and flew to the United
States.....
Maturity has nothing to do with my choice of language moron, and if people
need me to persuade them to "my side". They're pretty lost anyway! Gee these
