Nobody said cleaning up one's nest was cheap, just necessary.

Ever wonder why there are fewer gas stations?

The cost of remedial site restoration is a given, but then comes the
double wall underground tank replacement if the station remains in
service.

Tri-Clor clean-ups is another..

Along with lead paint, just a few more items that require clean up.

Mix gas/oil around 25:1, not 50:1 for today's engines and you will be
a happy camper.

Cupla years back I drove to the homestead to get grampa's boat. Dad had
it shrink wrapped for me, after grampa died. It's a 14 foot moulded
hull money sink, but it was his, and now its mine. Nothing else
matters.

Brother Brian (the useful one of three... high steel and stainless
welder, knowns his shit) is there to check things out before I haul off
home on a 9 hour drive. Turns out the wheel bearings on the trailer are
shot, not unexpected. He has the welding truck and there's a bit of
repair that's worth doing. Gets done.

So. anyway.

1957 Johnson Seahorse 35 HP outboard. Brian cracks open the gas tank
and starts laughing his ass off.

I have a 5 gallon tank of leaded gas. 25 years, it's been sitting, and
likely as good as the day it was refined.

Even better? It's "purple gas". Gramps was a farmer and bought the dyed
stuff tax free.

Yup. 50:1 happened about 1960.

It's a hoot taking my kids out on the lake in Gramps's boat. I'm sure
he's laughing his ass off watching me sort things out.

Nope. But then that was then. Now is now. Thanks to all of the folks that
spend their days thinking of how to protect us from everything, we now have
oxygenated fuels and ethanol fuels. New problems now. Fuels today have an
affinity for water and very quickly become very acidic. Now we get to deal
with new problems such as carb seals disintegrating, etc. The crap they
foist on us just brings more and more new problems. I don't even bother to
keep 5 gallon cans of fuel on hand anymore, if I can't plan on using the
over the period of a couple of months. And to think - there were times when
the gas tank in my '45 Allis Chalmers WC might have gone a year without
having been re-fueled - with no problems.

They have to hire a lead abatement contractor

This is a contractor who has:

A) registered with the federal gov't.
B) paid the fees.
C) sent worker/attended lead abatement school @ several hundred bucks
per class per worker.
D) taken the lead abatement test and passed.
E) uses extreme care when sanding lead-based paint, following all lead
dust containment methods using new high-priced containment gear.
F) stores said gnarlyass toxic WMD stuff in special, high-priced,
fed-approved containers.
G) sends the lead paint in those caontainers to fed-approved toxic
waste sites and pays the enormous fees for dumping.
H) does all the paperwork throughout this dog and pony show.

I'll likely stop doing any painting in the future. It just ain't worth
the hassle, even if some grandmas _can_ afford it. Most won't be able
to. Luckily, I didn't do much painting anyway, and most of that was
inside, so it won't be a real loss. Then again, I might make good
referral fees from the guys willing to do the fed dance.

Oh, for those who don't play by the rules, the EPA penalties can be
"up to $32,500 per violation, per day." God bless em!

See www.nahb.org/leadpaint for more info.

Oops, update: It takes effect on Earth Day, Apr 22, 2010.

Cool! That Olds surely had leaded gas in it, too.

Question: Do you feel that the removal of lead from our ecosystem has
resulted in a smarter and more savvy civilization?

I don't, either. If anything, society seems to be dumbing down.

As of yesterday, all contractors in the USA have to test (and control)
all paint for lead for areas over 6 square feet. It's going to cost
me $25 (min) to test granny's barn paint for lead, so estimates are
