How about "blank"?
Switched to that a few years ago after spending too much time on msn.
It doesn't get much less distracting and take up fewer resources than a white screen.

I have my home page set to my webpage. It not only lets me know if my
network connection is up, but also if my webpage is up. (The icon in the
notification area does a fine job of showing network status as well.)

My problem isn't the articles so much--it's the 300+ comments people
write following the articles!
The main problem with "blank" is it provides no hint of the status of
your network connection.
Whatever else we do, at least we are trying to claim the rights to our time.

Quite true, but you can easily enough type in any url you want to verify
that. It takes seconds - if that is important to you.

Don't know about Apples, but both Linux and Windows (at least XT) show a
small network status icon at the bottom right of the screen - position
may be different if you've set your system up differently.
