Canada. A few days ago I purchased some lumber at my local Home depot.
On the Credit card machine a question came up before allowing me to
proceed. It asked "Would you like your receipt emailed to you? Y/N"
My God! Is the next thing the same way the phoney grocery bag scam has
gone? Are we going to have to pay for a printed store receipt if we
don't want to give out our spammail address?
After all it's all in the name of green planet hype, isn't it? That
paper receipt will kill millions of omeba in the twilight zone that
protects earth.

Different policies for different locations. I see different policies in
different parts of town for the same stores. In one of the WalMarts in
Houston you have to go through an electronically controlled gate to get
"into" the garden center. If the store is situated in an unsavory part
of town it is probably in the stores best interest to require a receipt,
otherwise the store might be giving a refund or store credit on
merchandise that was never purchased to begin with.

Lowes has that. Basically a web site where you can keep stuff like paint
colors you purchased for various rooms, dimensions, etc. You can also
see your purchases if you swipe your card at checkout.
Overall not too annoying if you choose to ignore it. I have used it to
pick up an extra gallon of paint when I've either forgotten the color
mix code or forgot to bring in the old lid.

There are certainly income and sometimes sales tax regulations that impact
receipts used by businesses in regard to expense records.

Find the prospect's wallet.
Determine how much money is in the wallet.
Find something the prospect accept in exchange for that money.
Head to the bank.

They ask your phone number and store the purchase information using
that.

It's OPTIONAL, and If you spend high five to six figures/year on material
purchases, and must account for every penny, it's a handy one. I find it
particularly handy when I have to send someone else to pickup materials
ordered online/on site, when the receipt may not make it back to me.

In some parts of some towns that is a VERY real possibility.

Mike, You will be given a Paper receipt always and without asking at Home D=

also receive a email of your receipt. If you elect No to many times the pr=

I love e-receipts, I can easily read them on my computer and they never fad=

I do know that whenever I send someone with my company HD card to
purchase something needed right away, I insist they say "yes" to the
prompt, and I get a receipt immediately on my phone or tablet, and
without them having to enter an email address - otherwise I may not get
the physical receipt at all by the end of the day.
I live and die by budgetary accountability, and receipts are mandatory,
so love the feature myself ... then again, it is not unusual for me to
charge in high five figures at each of the BORGS on one project.
The ability to logon to HD and Lowe's websites and download all the
purchase and return receipts, over a range of specified dates, is a real
handy feature when accountability is priority one.

I always charge back the card. If not absolutely required with a
business account (yep, I've been in line behind behind some silver
tongued devils who got cash back on a commercial account return), doing
so also simplifies bottom line/budget accounting to be able to enter the
negative amount of the credit/return in spreadsheet/accounting software,
especially if the returns were part of a larger purchase.
Having lived through both, this digital age sure makes Elvis' "TCB" a
lot easier to do than it used to be.

Well, I don't know how the commercial accounts were handled, only
retail. When they posted the new policy by the registers it was a shock.
I don't know if that policy is still in effect, but it was unfair to
apply that current policy to a purchase that I made earlier.
I had received the 20% off coupon in the mail from HD for moving in. So
we had to use it quick b4 it expired. So it was 99 when we moved in, and
probably got the coupon in March and bought everything by April.. the
reno stuff, even the grill, all the locks, the paints, you name it.
But I was doing the basement for my son so he could have a play area.
I tried returning the overage in 2001 or 2002. I had to return the stuff
to the house (I had rented their truck for the return)
.
Then I was able to return it once Lowe's opened I think in 2003.

You don't need a computer to get an e-mailed receipt. You only need an
e-mail address. You can access that through a smart phone, iPad or the
like, TV, public computer. etc.

Lowes has that. Basically a web site where you can keep stuff like
paint
colors you purchased for various rooms, dimensions, etc. You can also
see your purchases if you swipe your card at checkout.
Overall not too annoying if you choose to ignore it. I have used it to
pick up an extra gallon of paint when I've either forgotten the color
mix code or forgot to bring in the old lid.

Nice idea but I still want paper receipts. Most of this e-Invoice stuff
is just crap that wastes most petroleum and computer chips than the
recyclable and renewable forest products. The online statements means
you have to religiously download your invoices form what?.... 20 or
maybe 50 accounts each month or you have no records when the product
goes wrong. Half these high-tech companies can't be trusted to even
make out the balance statement correctly now wit the 18 year old
accountants running the web stuff. Crap! my energy statements were
wrong four times in the last 12 months. My phone bill was wrong last
month. Several times my cell bill charged me for services that aren't
on my plan.
I want the paper bills. Just don't make them 6 pages like some of the
utilities have. Don't charge me $2 for a paper bill snuck into the bill
aside from regulatory controls either when you can send out paper mail
spam every month about shit I already have. And don't charge me $0.05
for a shopping bag and then hide the recyclable paper bags so you can
sell me a plastic reusable bag that makes 100 times the garbage weight.
The shopping chain stores were stopped from giving out the paper bags
when their no-plastic give-aways, use or new greenTM bags instead,
started.
Check it out. Eco-Friendly and Green are both registered trademarks to
con you into buying more environmentally dirty products. They don't
care about the environment. They only want YOU to focus on something
other than your wallet while they empty it.

Yep, I recently lost my reciept for a new weed trimmer... damn, I can't
find it... I usually scan them into the computer.
Do I find it intrusive... well, maybe, but in this case, it might have
saved me, since I now have no reciept.

We have that at the HDs in Indianapolis as well. The stupid thing is that if you say yes, you
get a paper receipt anyway!

I'm all for reducing environmental impact, but always choose the paper
receipt. I don't want to type in my email address at the store, or
receive a bunch of junk mail later.
If they insist on going digital, I would rather carry a USB flash drive
with me and let them save a PDF version of the receipt to that. They save
paper, I get a digital copy, and no junk mail. If enough places did it,
it would be no different than carrying around a wallet full of credit and
debit cards.
As for the paper receipts, I have three Home Depot receipts in front of
me right now. The store name/address and my list of purchases are 4" to
6" long on each receipt. The remaining 6" to 8" is about store policies,
information on home pickups, chances to win gift cards, surveys, and an
advertisement for redbeacon. They could cut their paper usage by 1/2 to
2/3 by replacing all that extra junk with a simple one or two line web
link for more information.
Most stores are guilty of excessive paper use. My recent Safeway grocery
receipt has an extra 6" at the bottom telling me my accumulations for
sandwich credits, surveys, back to school items, gas rewards, etc.
Wasteful.
Heck, bank and bill statements are excessively wasteful too. Very
inefficient layouts, often taking three pages for information that would
easily have fit on one. Or the one I love, "this page is intentionally
left blank". If you can print that line on there, why not print my
account information there instead and save some paper?
I have gone digital for most bank and bill statements that offer it. Less
waste, and it's less work for me to download the statement and archive it
than it is to scan in the paper statements. But I don't care for the
emailed store receipts.

Having to type in my email address is more of a hassle than dealing with
the junk mail. I could easily opt out or filter the email, but when I'm
done shopping I just want to check out as quickly as possible.
Obviously, neither of these is a big deal, but the paper receipt works
fine for me.

> really that big a deal?
Email is frequently deleted by spam filters, or simply lost in cyberspace
somewhere. There's a good chance that a receipt sent by email would never
arrive.
Email is also not secure. Granted, it's probably no big deal if someone
else sees what you bought at Home Depot, but it's still a matter of
privacy.
I would rather have an account online where I could log in and download
my receipt, just like most online retailers and banking statements. Maybe
have a member card I could swipe (like most grocery stores have).
Regardless, this is just a thought discussion. The paper receipt works
fine for me, but I'm not totally against the email version either. It's
just a matter of minimizing hassle. :)
> you could always scan your originals in while they are still
> legible, but who does that...
I scan many receipts for items that have warranties, or items I simply
want to remember when/where I purchased them. Usually that's big items
like a TV, computer part, lawnmower, or whatever.

Dayum, that sucks ... it's literally the Eleventh Commandment that both
HD and Lowe's take returns 'no questions asked' around here, as long as
you use a credit card ... and for most cash transactions to boot.
Part of the ritual closing of every job is taking all the pristine
unused items in for charge back. AAMOF, I have a big box on each site
that unused plumbing and electrical parts we buy go into for that very
reason.
Adds up to a beaucoup buck$ in a year ...

They do in every store I've been in. I've also returned merchandise
with no receipt or when I didn't use my phone number (self-checkout).
They don't want to piss off customers, however don't make a regular
practice of returning anything. They do keep track.

HD did. I took the copy back at a later time and tried returning it.
They told me I needed the original receipt.
The copy had it clearly printed that it was not usable for a return.
I showed them my credit card bill and the date, they were able to look
it up.. but they wanted the original for the return. It pissed me off.

It's more for record keeping. Some people find that useful so they have the
receipt and don't have to worry about losing it. I'm not big on it but for
warranty claims that require a receipt, it can be a useful idea.

I would definitely refuse.
I have a mediocre connection, have already had fraud on my credit card......
I am sick of the e-mail transactions they want us to do.
Now think about it.
They usually send us a receipt at the end of the month.
I am a contractor and get hard copies for myself, my bookkeeper and the
owners.
I would have to print that out anyway......
Where is the savings?
Also record keeping.
Yes, I know, you can back it up, e-mail it to customers....
Pretty soon, I will be only in front of my computer.....
Day and nights.

I don't know how it is where you live, but our local Lowes and Home
Depot are basically retail store catering to the home owner, the DYIers,
and people who convert wood into saw dust in their spare time.
I doubt that only a small percent can find the receipt by the time they
get their purchase out to the car. I know that discribes me.
I download my card purchases on a routine basis and account for
everything so know exactly what I have purchased. So not getting a
receipt would not be a big deal. I know the card entry is as good as
the receipt.
HOWEVER, I have all of the receipts for tools and equipment that I have
bought.

Not really so stupid at all. At least at this phase of the program, it's a
question asking if you want something additional, not an either or question.
Maybe that's how it will unfold in time, but not now.
I just don't understand why minds seem so inclined to look for (not look
at...) every single evil incarnation they can imagine. Does the word
"paranoia" have any meaning here? Or maybe just "bitching"?

get - well it's all here to see in this thread...

As a landlord, it is sure nice to have that receipt in a digital form
that doesn't get lost in the bag or fade out over time. I can give them
my spam mail address and just remember to go get that one before I clean

You probably don't even need that. As a landlord, you probably have one
card you use for purchases for your rentals. HD only needs to know what
card you used for the purchase and they can look it up. This is what I
do for my HD buys.

Wasn't that long ago. The system still is not perfect - it owes a bit to
the kind of card you used, as well as how long ago. I'm sure they'll get it
ironed out, and you're lucky it's worked well for your needs so far, but it
does have some way to go yet - perhaps a small way, but a ways all the same.
It's a corporate issue - not a local issue because the POS terminals
reference the corporate systems for this kind of lookup. It will puke if
your bank or you change any aspect of your card - even your PIN. But like I
say - they'll get it ironed out.

Agreed - too many trees wasted on useless marketing. But what's worse and
what this really points to is that the receipts you have in front of you
will remain legible for a few months and then they'll be useless. The
electronic version does not suffer that fate. Of course, you could always
scan your originals in while they are still legible, but who does that...

that presupposes that they'll pay attention to your request, or change
their policy from under you without notice. too many sites don't pay any
attention to the 'do not solicit' checkbox.

You are correct that many don't, but the reputable places such as HD are
usually much better about that. I'd be comfortable with them in this case.

You will not get an emailed receipt.

I actually do, my parents, but they are into their 90's, and not
changing anytime soon.
I would like to think that unless your credit card has an email addy on
file for you the prompt would not even come up.

I have observed that Amazon.com has, as part of my account, all of the
details of every purchase I have ever made there. I have found that
handy at least once or twice.

And I'd guess they're not all that likely to spend a lot of time at Home
Depot. For what shopping they do - HD is probably happy to let that type of
consumer fall through the cracks as far a this matter goes.

Not at all. It would more likely come up for every transaction - cash or
credit.

Huh? Why would you need a receipt for a purchase Jeff? As for returns, HD
will look up the card you purchased any item on (as long as it was purchased
on a card), in the absense of a receipt. Whoever told you that you needed a
receipt at HD is dead wrong.

My mother-in-law has one too, my dad saw the blinking lights from the
modem and router, said what is that, started telling him, and then he
said "Nevermind, sorry I asked" :-)
Works out for me, glad I do not have to do technical support for them.

It sure as hell should have pissed you off. It's HD's policy to just look
it up as long as it was purchased on a card. Likely they will only offer
you store credit (though often they will simply refund the amount), if it's
past 90 days (if I recall correctly), but short of that your local HD was
supposed to take the return per their policy. But... shoulda is just
shoulda, ya know...

That sucks Jeff. It's got to be that store Manager's policy, but he's
outside of the corporate policy - as evidenced by the other stores in your
area. I'd be shopping somewhere else, that's for sure.

Senator Reid said to day that there were many people who never used a
computer and that was causing the problems with the Obamacare website.

*Usually*... not so with Home Depot. They are really big on consistency
across the company. That said, Jeff's later postings stated that his
experiences were over 10 years ago - can't speak to how things might have
worked back then.

HD does not offer that service in the NJ area.
I would chose it.
Are you allowed to use it for returns. I recently needed a receipt for a
purchase, and they gave it to me, but would not take a return on the item.

Well around here they stopped taking returns past 30 days.
I had bought more tha 10k worth of goods when I moved in here, 3 truck
loads. They told me I could return whatever I didn't use any time, so I
bought an extra anywhere from 10 to 20%.
Then they changed the return policy and I had all this overage, and they
refused to take any of it back. At first I started selling some of it to
friends, like the ceiling tiles, and some other stuff. But I had a lot
of sheetrock left as we changed design and I had ordered more than
needed. Well I kept arguing with them over the change in policy..
finally Lowe's opened and I told them I didn't need them anymore, and
they changed their tune and took back the sheetrock, insulation, steel
framing, and some other stuff.
I think they still have that policy now. I'll bet it is market driven.
As in this market they don't have the e-receipts. Nor do they take back
stuff without the original receipt.
I stopped by another HD on my way home from work, with a piece of my
siding. They mixed paint that color matched the siding, but when I got
home the color was off. So I went to the local HD, they mixed up new
paint, but the cashier got the manager involved and she would not
exchange the paint, she said it came from another store so I would have
to pay for the paint mix. I refused... so now they had mixed the paint
and I would not pay. I went back to the other store and told them what
happened and they could not believe that the local store would not
exchange it. They actually returned the cost of the paint for my trouble.
Unfortunately Lowe's is not the answer and neither is HD.
My local lumber yard closes at 4:30 so when I am working it's hard to
get there in time. They are there early, but too many contractors in
front of me... so it's not worth doing an early trip.
