Hanging a Shelf Mantel

Any suggestions on concealled hanging methods for attaching a shelf-
type mantel to a brick hearth?

I was thinking of a cleat system where a cleat attached to the brick
would mate with a mortise cut in the underside of the mantel top.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks Randy. I went poking around Lowes at lunch but couldn't find
anything. Which department did you see this in?

If your hearth has a couple of bricks jutted out where the mantel is to be
placed....all you have to do is install a couple of lag bolts in the rear of
the mantel and saw the heads off of them. Then drill two masonary holes in
the hearth to match. Slide the mantel in place.....if the fit is snug you
are done. If not, bend one of the lag bolts to suit. Mine has been hanging
there since 1989 with plenty of junk sitting on it. :-) All the lag bolts do
is keep the back of the mantel from tipping up. poor drawing below.
Good luck Lyndell

P.S. Use a large enough lag and it might work without the jutted brick. I
had the advantage of being able to tell the brick layer what I wanted. :-)
Leave sawed edge where the head is removed rough so it will bite into
masonary. A little construction adhesive might not hurt.

Yeah, Cleat is the best option.
I saw a cleat made from Alumiun at lowes made for projects like that.
There are two parts and even comes with a level to level the cleats
when attaching

That's the normal accepted method.
