RIP NYW

I guess it is official now. I recall some one here mentioning that the end
was probably near some months back. Apparently the end has come and gone.
This past Spring the 21st and last season was shot endign with a 2 part
series on building a desk. The NYW web site will remain open, at least for
a while, and Norm will still be seen on TOH.

LRod, you can finally give it a rest. LOL

Think sindication.

Less work, more money.

I do not understand your reference to syndication. Isn't the show
already syndicated? It's a product of WGBH, but I get it on PBS. I'm
not sure how public broadcasting works. I thought the member stations
were all independent. Elaborate please.
---------------------------------------------------

I'm clueless how syndication works other than to know that TV shows
from the 50's and 60's are still appearing on a regular basis in the
L/A market.

As the years went on, the tools became more automated, more complex,
and more expensive; however, the basics of the table saw,
router/router station, drill press, band saw, etc still remained.

I'm a great believer in a drum sander for instance, but no way would I
consider buying one when commercial shops are available at reasonable
cost.

If nothing else NYW offered more than just a single application of a
drum sander which was in itself a worthwhile lesson.

It's much better this way. If Norm doesn't want to do NYW, then don't
find a new guy to do it. Compare The Price is Right. Bob Barker brought
something special to the show, something Drew Carey lacks. While I never
was a regular viewer, I'm now an active avoider of the Drew Carey
versions.

There still room for the genre of a host who does everything, just don't
try to shoehorn it into NYW format.

Without question; however, maybe there is hope on the horizon.

Fallon holds out hope, but that may be a stretch.

Ferguson has talent as a stand up, if only they would dump the present
format and turn him loose.

Keep guessing. The Price is Right and Tonight Show are essential
showpieces in the General Audience wing of the Museum of Television.
Just like NYW is the prime one in the Woodworking wing.

It'll be a while before they're old enough as to be forgotten.

I have never met Norm. But when he was here last some of guys that
did said he was a change man from his visit ten years ago.

This part is second hand, so take it for what it is worth:

They told me he still liked the woodwork, still liked his working
arrangement with Morash, but felt tired and was looking to spend more
time with his family. They said they thought he was looking to for
new challenges himself.

Even though he does have a cool job, 20 years of a grind would do me
in no matter what the job. Norm is pushing (or is) 60, so he is
probably thinking there is no better time than now to start new
endeavors.

I applaud him having the courage to walk away from a successful
business, guaranteed money, his own show and fan base to go to other
things. This is sooooo much better than watching him die a long, slow
painful on-the-air death.

Personally, I hope the best for him and want to see more of him in the
future.

Syndication:

PBS doesn't really "own" NYW or TOH or ATOH. They are
owned by Morash and he sold some of the shows to Time Warner.
I think he retained rights to NYW.

PBS stations sometimes produce their own shows. We have
a couple hear in the SF area. The national shows like
the "News Hour" are PBS produced, as well as the "Masterpiece"
shows (tho most of those shows are re-runs of British shows).

When your local PBS station decides to broadcast a show it
doesn't own, it has to pay for that right.

NYW was syndicated on the DIY network for awhile. It's off, I believe.
The biggest thing they could do would put them on iTunes. Then
they would be available on as needed basis and be able to collect
a royalty for the downloads.

I'm sad to see it go. I can't say I was ever a faithful watcher of
the show (who is inside on a Saturday afternoon?) but when I saw the
show it was informative and entertaining.

I never knew why that nice man was such a lightening rod for
criticism, especially from the hobby guys. I didn't really see many
professionals give him any grief.

My pal in the roofing business used to record and watch him regularly,
and has told me more than once he saw some hint or trick on "old
Norm's show". I think he inspired a lot of folks, instructed a lot of
folks and has become fixture that is taken for granted.

He has made a couple of appearances here in San Antonio a over the
years and has been hosted by our local Woodcraft. Never once did any
of the guys, not even those cranky old retired "expert" shits that
work at WC say a bad thing about him.

Too bad. It may not be much of a loss to a some, but after watching
his excellent, several episode arc on building kitchen cabinets, he
will definitely be a loss to a legion of woodworkers. I think that
with some basic skills (please don't follow his finishing efforts) an
average Joe could get in a build some nice cabinets for their house
after watching the episodes.

I take that back. With no other patient, calm, modest instructors on
any channel these days, it is a loss to all of us.

I watched and liked him in the first few seasons. Then it became
endorsement-heavy and downright silly with TimeSavers etc.
Then again, you can do birdhouses only so many times as well...
It is hard to make it interesting for such a diverse audience.
I'm surprised it took this long.

Do that with all the people who prefer plastic bags while shopping,
too. Or people who want to buy $200 devices to read ebooks because
cutting down trees to make paper isn't green, as if building
electronic devices is (but this is on a par with those who think it's
green to pour concrete inside of stay-in-place plastic foam forms when
housebuilding). People do not bother to think it through, but,
instead, jump on the first wagon that rolls by.

I think I am a bit more cynical. I always that it was stupid
arrogance combined with ignorance. I was pretty damn sick and tired
of hearing the weekend guys standing around saying things like "well
hell yeah, if I had all those damn tools I could build that too!".

Horseshit.

As an empirical comparison, I could take almost every one of those
same guys and sit them in front of a computer and show them estimating
spreadsheets, accounting programs, photo management programs, and word
processing software. By simply having the computer in front of them
with he programs loaded up enable them to turn out a sophisticated
estimate backed with embedded/notated pictures, cost breakdowns of the
job by subcontractor, and then a legal, binding contract? Not one
tiny chance.

Better yet, I have let a couple of the larger mouthed guys borrow a
tool or two "that they needed to get the job done". 9 times out of
10, the tool is of no help. Other strange forces seem to conspire
against the barstool geniuses of woodworking.

Norm built such a wide variety of projects over the years you know it
takes a full time dedication to learning all the techniques, processes
and protocols involved in every aspect of his projects.

His solutions to cutting, assembly and actually thinking out details
of design and construction show he was much more than just a pretty
face in plaid.

I watched an interview with Morash one time, and he said that the
budget was so low for the show for the first 10 years that Norm did
everything down to cleaning up the shop. Of course all of that has
changed, but as with most craftsmen, they can turn out the project
with the tools they have. I know that a panel sander was a handy tool
for Norm, but he didn't always have one. I know that he put rails and
stiles together without Kreg equipment, but he didn't always have that
either. Same with the biscuit machine, cordless drills to drive
purpose made screws, and many other of his "stuff". I still remember
when Norm used the lowly pipe clamp as his clamping device! Yet his
projects sill came out, and new ones were always in the works using
the tools he had.

Not so sure about the envy angle, but you might have something. I'm
sticking with stooopid.

I find it kind of odd that they wont keep the show running with a new
host. Have Norm make guest appearances, etc. This Old House has had
major changes with hosts over the years and it's still going strong.

Those guys could get more laughs with a simple upturned eyebrow than some

LOL, who crapped in your cornflakes? My goodness, my posting had nothing
to do with politics, it was simply an off-handed remark to one of the
earlier comments regarding choice of persons to be stranded with au
naturale. I simply picked some attractiveness-challenged personalities in
response and you spun up into full attack mode. Good grief! Calm down, not
everything is driven by politics -- some people are simply unattractive
regardless of their political bent.

Two problems with your theory. First, my wife will never believe that you
are more cynical than me.

Second, I could build all that stuff it I had all those tools, a shop that
large, and the budget for materials. It would take me longer than the 30
minutes he does it in though. Trust me, I'd never kid about that. Just get
me the tools and I'll prove it to you. Of course, the only way to prove it
is to try it so you guys should chip in and get me the tools. If I can't do
it, I'll give them back.

The one that surprised me was Buddy Hackett. Up until I saw one of his

Winter's on the way. Would they move to Oz once a year to swap seasons?

Too bad. I know several here didn't appreciate Norm or his show. But
I think he did more to promote the craft among potential newbies than
anyone.

Hell, you could be a really fat and disgusting guy with a great personality.
Maybe it doesn't happen as much as one would like, but sometimes the fat and
disgusting guy gets the girl.

(That's what all we fat, disgusting guys like to believe anyway. Gives us
hope!)

It would be interesting to do a study, if one could at this late date,
to see exactly how many billions of dollars worth of supplies and
tools Norm sold, simply via the creation of interest in "hey *I* can
do this".

Everybody likes to tinker, build and create stuff. Stuff they can step
back from and feel proud about. Even better if that project draws the
compliments from friends, family and neighbours.

Norm made things look easy. That was/is a confidence builder. THAT is
what makes a guy buy a tool "like Norm"..thousands and thousands of
them.....

I'm not making light of his contribution to the industry. I think if
it were known in real numbers, it would blow your mind.

I find it kind of odd that they wont keep the show running with a new
host. Have Norm make guest appearances, etc. This Old House has had
major changes with hosts over the years and it's still going strong.

I'm not sure that applies to all shows... Roy Underhill has mentioned a
number of times in public venues and in small groups that PBS stations can
run The Woodwright's Shop for free... State Farm pays for it. Though he also
wonders if State Farm, as an insurance company, would continue to underwrite
the show if they saw some of the things he does... He said that when he put
his shaving horse on top of his work bench and climbed up there so that
folks in the back of the room could see what he was doing. ;~)

It is to bad - but what can you do.

Years from now on one of the DIY, HGTV, Create channels there will a "new
show" that doesn't have a host who does all the talking while a team of
carpenters, plumbers, etc. work in the background. It will be a person in a
shop who explains how to make things. Those of us who are old enough will
say - Gee it is just like the NYW used to be.

Sorry to hear that. Haven't watched for years, not because I didn't like
it, but because it was difficult to find a time when it would be shown
rather than being preempted by another PBS Begathon. Just kind of drifted
away from even checking for it.

Exactly, Norm made woodworking accessible, and he encouraged people to
expand their boundaries and try new techniques. I can think of things I
tried after seeing Norm demonstrate them--I'm going to miss that show.

Do you WANT me to go blind?!

I do not understand your reference to syndication. Isn't the show
already syndicated? It's a product of WGBH, but I get it on PBS. I'm
not sure how public broadcasting works. I thought the member stations
were all independent. Elaborate please.

Judging by the title of the link, I feel it safe to assume that this

Too limited. You could do a similar study on Billy Mays. Now what
would be really interesting is if a study was done on how many people
Norm got interested in woodworking to the point that they continued on
with the craft.

Hell, Mae West was better than most of today's full-time "comics."
Jane Russell popped a couple I didn't understand for some years: "Are
you fond of me, or is that a pickle in your pocket?" IIRC, that was to
Bob Hope, a guy I'd like to have seen live forever.

Evidently you are not alone or he would not have the show. Me, OTOH, cannot
bear to watch Conan for two minutes. He just seems fake or uncomfortable or
something. Leno I can take in short doses. Carson is still king.

According to the greenies we don't need to build stuff at all--we should all
be running around naked in the primeval paradise.

Agree completely. Remember watching probably one of the first shows with
Bob V. Norm was the carpenter on a large farm house in New England. His
knowledge on construction was unique. He did make it clear that most of it
came from his father at a very young age. Use to tape those early shows and
replay them every chance I got. Believe Norm had a lot to do with me
getting into woodworking and the business of remodeling after I retired.
Enjoyed his simply approach and easy to understand instructions.

I too lost the connection with PBS and never able to follow when the show
was on or the Begathon's preempted the show. I always thought Norm was
never comfortable being in front of the camera and the center of
attraction. To me he was a simple man thrown in front of an idea that took
off and did his best to make it work and it did. I will miss him.
Good Luck in whatever he decides to do

Good to encounter someone else who likes Jessica Alba and Scarlett
Johansen--a lot of people don't for some reason. And most people will tell
you that I would fit in just fine as the fat digusting guy. But after a
month without technology we'll all be pretty disgusting (remember no tech
means no soap, no toothpaste, no plumbing, sleep on the bare ground . . .)

My Dad, who wasn't much of a TV watcher, used to say that Bob Barker was the
last true showman.

I gotta say, I never saw Leno do _anything_ like the time that Carson nailed
Uri Gellar--the twit couldn't show his face on an American stage for decades
after that.

Times change and so does humor. And people feel an attachment to
entertainers... kind of like sports teams.

I had no attachment to either Jay nor Conan, but I can see that Conan is
way, way funnier that Jay.

What change was that???

It's still a generally lame monologue followed by a parade of worthless
"guests" plugging latest whatever (book/movie/drunk-driving
arrrest/wathever) followed by a nobody-ever-heard-of-'em music group.

Other than "Monday Night Headlines" there's never a thing worth keeping

It is strange how a post about Norm and NYW can digress into liberal

This reminds me of some guy that said pickup trucks **hall** more stuff

Actually, he is not totally correct.

Allen to Parr = upgrade/downgrade? Parr to Carson = Upgrade. Carson to
Leno = downgrade. Leno to O'Brian = Downgrade.

When I was young I thought Parr sucked, and liked Allen. I suspect if I
were older, I would have liked Parr more than Allen. I never liked
Leno's show, but I always sort of liked Leno himself. Out of all of the
bastards, I probably would rather go to a bar, or anywhere, with Leno
than the rest of them. He seems almost down to earth, as opposed the
the rest of the dimwitted blow hards.

It's tough not to admire Beck. I understand a conservative like you
hating liberals like Bush and O'Reilly but why you don't like a
conservative like Beck is a mystery.

He exposed Van Jones, the Communist green jobs czar of Obama, whilst the
rest of the media was busy jerking off over Barney Frank.

He exposed ACORN as it was indicted in 14 states for voter fraud, whilst
the rest of the media was busy counting fake ACORN votes for Al Franken.

He let everyone know GE's (owner of MS NBC) CEO, is an Obama adviser,
and up to their collective necks in getting rich[er] over the green
movement, whilst the rest of the media was busy blowing ALGORE.

He exposed ACORN aiding and abetting pimping 13 year old illegal alien
prostitutes whilst the rest of the media was busy trying to make Pelosi
look human, and doing their collective best to cover up how much money
the corrupt government was giving the low life crooks of ACORN to
promote democrats.

He has let everyone know that White house communications director, Anita
Dunn's favorite philosopher is none other than the Communist mass
murderer Mao Tse-tung, whilst the rest of the media was busy hyping
swine flu.

He has exposed our grade schools indoctrinating our children with
anti-capitalist propaganda and pro cross dressing garbage whilst the
rest of the media was busy ignoring everything to help the radical, far
left Marxists usurp the democratic party in a major effort to eliminate
individual freedom in the US,not to mention beating their meat over
Michael Moore.

Well, I reckon some people admire Glenn Beck, others admire Mao Tse-Tung.

FWIW, I've never heard anyone mentioned in this thread curse.
I agree, however, in principle.

I watched that show to. Think it's the best on the so called Health Care
Scare issue Ive seen.

I agree with you on number 1. Number 2 was not really talked about much. I
got the impression from the Doctors that the more Congress sticks their
nose into something the more it gets screwed up or just SCREWED! Another
words can't Congress just go on Vacation Forever!

I agree. If employers paid for "insurance" for hamburgers at
McDonald's, a big mac and fries would cost $120, just like a doctors
visit. Thing is, government would be worse than the insurance
companies. Never a good plan to fix things by making them worse.

>> 2. If Congress exempts themselves from whatever health care legislation

Anytime the government says "I from the government, and I'm here to help
you" you can be sure someone is going to get screwed, probably you,
along with a slew of others.

I thought it was one of his worst shows. I don't like live audience
participation much.

I got that impression from being around the government for many years.
Those that haven't noticed might be interested in the thoughts of our
founding fathers, rather than Van Jones, Mao Tse-Tung and Karl Marx.

Whats Obama going to say, Van Jones is not a commie? Acorn is not
corrupt? Anita Dunn's favorite philosopher ain't Mao? Our schools are
not indoctrinating our kids with anti-American, socialist propaganda?
He has all this and much more on live video. He's the only one with
balls to expose these crazy socialist bastards for what they are.

Many years ago I went to a Tonight Show on a Friday night to see
Johnny Carson. It was fun. I had 4 tickets and could not give away
two of them. Much different to see it live than on TV.

At first he ran the show like Carson did. That was Carson's deal. Leno
loosened up more and added more to the show than basically doing every thing
inside the studio.

I'm confused, are you talking about Carson or Leno, or Conan?

You did not like Jay Walking, visiting neighbors, the old spoof on used car
salesman? You probably had to actually watch the show regularily to see all
the phases Leno went through the years.

Somehow I think Norm will be back eventually in some form. Or he'll
buy a boat. Either way if his wife thinks he's finally going to work
on the to do list she's setting herself up for disappointment.

Yeah, but the fat disgusting guy is also pretty smart. He knows that a
little animal tallow from the wild beasts they've been eating and some
lye are the basic ingredients for making soap. With that, he can win
the girl easily.

I have to wonder if a bit of jealousy is involved. After saving up for six
months to buy a palm sander, Joe Sixpak watches Norm say "lets take to over

I switched to Dave when Leno came in... he's so much more natural as a wise
guy than Jay. Neither are Johnny! Conan who...? Oh yeah, caught him about
twice and that was enough.

If taken to it's logical conclusion quality woodworking is the ultimate
green hobby... the "trees" can last potentially forever as a fine piece of
furniture whereas in the woods the tree would die, fall down and rot away.

You got it! One of the reasons why it is imperative to see pictorial
evidence of what runs out of some mouths before taking it to heart.

Norm, and both shows in which he is involved, are to
woodworking/remodeling as Michelangelo is to DIY TV/shitting on a
blanket and calling it art.

he has been at the helm for a while he will change the format to something

I watched his reforming health care panel with a bunch of doctors the
other day ... it was the only thing I've seen on the issue thus far that
had the two most salient points that the media, and everyone else, seems
to be ignoring.

1. Insurance is, and has been, the PROBLEM, NOT the solution.

2. If Congress exempts themselves from whatever health care legislation
they pass, it will ultimately NOT be good for YOU!

Now, if Beck would just quit acting so damn silly and childish ...

No surprise... Norm said he wanted to wind down and have time for himself
and his wife Elise when I met them at Sturbridge Village in August 2004...
From that I'd expected the end to come sooner.
