OT: It had to happen.

Just saw on the news that Californians are protesting to hardware/hard drive
manufacturers that the terms "master" and "slave" are considered
"inappropriate" and hardware manufactures should re-name them to something
less offensive, like primary and secondary.

Is it ever gone to end?

I hope this is one of those joke news items. But probably not, given the
location.

It does not appear to be: one from Bob's Junkmail follows.

It isn't a big deal at all, unless you work for the county of Los Angeles.
Here's an email they sent out last week:

"Subject: IDENTIFICATION OF EQUIPMENT SOLD TO LA COUNTY
Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 14:21:16 -0800
From: "Los Angeles County"

"The County of Los Angeles actively promotes and is committed to ensure a work
environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or
perceived. As such, it is the County's expectation that our manufacturers,
suppliers and contractors make a concentrated effort to ensure that any
equipment, supplies or services that are provided to County departments do not
possess or portray an image that may be construed as offensive or defamatory in
nature.

"One such recent example included the manufacturer's labeling of equipment
where the words "Master/Slave" appeared to identify the primary and secondary
sources. Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County,
this is not an acceptable identification label.

"We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review,
identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment or
components thereof that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in
nature before such equipment is sold or otherwise provided to any County
department.

"Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance.

"Joe Sandoval, Division Manager
Purchasing and Contract Services
Internal Services Department
County of Los Angeles"

It reall, really should be embarrassing to be this stupid.

I feel sorry for you Americans for being conned/guilt-tripped into
taking the full, historical blame for slavery. Did you know that your
slave trade accounted for only slightly over FOUR PERCENT of the entire
trade?

Yeah, many of us do. And many of us realize that the basis for the trade was
often the selling of battle captives between tribes, as slaves, and to slave
traders, often Arab, again as slaves.

But the BS artists continue to put up the claims that we're all now responsible
for past slavery, and that even black who emigrated here from Jamaica 15 years
ago are entitled to reparations for slavery...though most of us come from
families that never owned slaves in the first place.

Sometimes, the PC types, conservative and liberal alike, get almost incredibly
thick on the ground with silly demands.

A primary or secondary is a name to designate the controller...and
either can have a master and slave. So a primary on a primary would
be confusing.

Maybe they can be color coded. lol

Seems a black man had actually made a complaint about the labeling showing
discrimination, back in May. That was when the tape-over incident occured,
according to an article I just read.

Sandoval, the turkey who actually made the "request" notes that we have to keep

This might be an urban myth, but was there not a discussion between
a major soda drink maker and a society group that took issue with the
letter "k" that was encircled on the soda bottle. The soda maker said
it was there to signify that it was 'kosher', and the society group
said it, to them, was a truncated version to represent the 'kkk.'

Friendly's has been Friendly's for almost 70 years. Sambo's was a
small chain like Denny's. They got into trouble with the PC police back in
the 1970's, changed the name to "No Place Likle Sam's" for a while, and
went belly-up shortly thereafter.

Maybe Friendly's opened some franchise locations in former Sambo's
spots, but Friendly's has always been a separate entity.

Anybody ever take them up on their Fribble deal? A Friendly's
Fribble was a giant ice-cream based milkshake, probably about 2750 calories
worth. Back when I was a kid, they had a special offer - if you could
consume two of them at one sitting, you would immediately get a third one,
free. If they did that now, they'd have to include a gift certificate for
Lipitor as well.

I stand corrected. The Sambo's here did change their name, but I didn't
remember them going belly up. Seemed like there was a very seamless
transition from "No Place etc." to Friendly's. Then again, I spent a lot of
time out of town in company training centers during the mid/late 70's, so it
might have all gone by while I was away.

I ran into this when trying to get a replacement slave cylinder for a

Funny thing is, the guy making the objection couldn't tell me what else

From what I read, it was a Los Angeles County Gov't thing. They want
everything to be "PC", so master and slave designations are not to
be used in documentation, bid proposals, etc.

How about "lord" and "peasant"? Or "dominant" and "submissive"? Maybe
"boss" and "lackey"? Anyway the new serial ATA interface is going to
become the standard and SATA can only support one drive per controller
so the whole issue will soon be moot. Except in Calley Fon Ya (ver
soon ve vill all have fabulous jobs) where this will be declared
unfair to those who have to support more than one of anything.

Nope. Us Kanuckistanis were responsible for that. It was made up from
Canada and oleum, the Latin word for oil. Rapeseed oil has a number of
toxic components, but Canadian researchers bred rapeseed varieties
whose oil is edible and wanted a name to distinguish it from the
original.

I'm sure that given the fact that San Francisco is in CA, daisy-
chained is not only acceptable, but a celebration of the diversity of
lifestyles practiced in this diverse community.

.. ah well, as they say, stupid is as stupid does.

Saw further information that LA was inundated with e-mails from across
the world excoriating the LA purchaser for the stupidity in his
pronouncement. Apparently he backpedaled a bit, indicating this was
only a "suggestion" for LA suppliers since other, more acceptable
phrases were equally correct. Which of course, shows the guy has no
clue, master/slave indicates an entirely different arrangement than
primary/secondary -- but then precision of language is not the goal of
the PC (and I don't mean personal computer) crowd.

Hee... That gives one thoughts though. "We're offended because this male
connector won't mate with the other male connector, and the female
connector won't mate with the other female connector. This computer
equipment is heterosexually biased, and we're offended. To avoid this
offense, you need to examine the population in your workplace and label all
female connectors as 'asshole' connectors, and/or re-label all male

Next on the agenda will be "primary" and "secondary" since the connotation
is that one is superior, in some manner, to the other. We certainly can't
have that thought running around in the common folk's head.

Legal Disclaimer: The necessity that one hard drive must, in some manner, be
subordinate to another hard drive is not intended to address the
circumstances of, or offend, any particular individual or entity and does
not necessarily reflect the social mores of the manufacturer, its employees,
heirs, and assigns. The manufacturer shall not be responsible for any angst,
offense, or loss of self esteem due to the necessity of enabling multiple
hard drive relationships. No one should enable a dependent feature without
appropriate advice from an emotional care professional.

Perfect. The ability of some cartoonist's to capture the ridiculous and
pathetic in human nature with a simple drawing and a few words is uncanny.

The good cartoonists are really good. Makes me recall a talk with my first MIL,
some 35 years ago. She felt I was judgmental. I asked her why I had spent 30
years learning to MAKE judgements, if I were going to be non-judgmental. I'm
still judgmental.

Oddly enough, she was a brilliant woman in most areas of life.

Just you wait. Six months from now we'll be reading about it in the papers,
and you'll find out Silvan was right about the whole thing. :)

LOL.

Makes ya wonder... Because of "master/slave's" S&M connotations, couldn't
another "lifestyle" group claim that they are being discriminated against
because LA County considers those words offensive?

I know what the cartoonist means, but it also hit a cord of tragedy.

I almost always do, Larry...and I was going to with that post also.

But then I thought...it would be good to post the whole thing...in
case anybody might miss the original...because of bad or late servers.

Your point is well taken, though. I always crop. Well, ALMOST

YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN SAN FRANCISCO WHEN...

- Your co-worker tells you she/he has 8 body piercings but none are visible.

- You make over $100,000 and still can't afford a house.

- You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in
English.

- You can't remember ... is pot illegal?

- You've been to more than one baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm
donor.

- You have a very strong opinion where your coffee beans are grown and can
taste the difference between Sumatra and Ethiopian.

- A really great parking space can move you to tears.

- You assume every company offers domestic partner benefits.

- Your child's 3rd grade teacher has two pierced ears, a nose ring and is
named "Breeze." And, after telling that to a friend, they still need to ask
if the teacher is male or female.

- A man walks on MUNI in full leather regalia and crotch less chaps. You
don't notice.

- A woman walks on MUNI with live poultry. You don't notice.

- You know that any woman with a George Clooney haircut is not a tourist.

- You keep a list of companies to boycott.

- Your hairdresser is straight, your plumber is gay, the woman who delivers
your mail is straight and your Mary Kay Lady is a guy in drag.

I couldn't resist!

I think so, yes. Probably right after we have our first official Emperor,
and the Congress is disbanded.

Yes, some of us know that. It is a relatively small but very vocal group who
feel the need to apologize for being white, American, ect.
