Can you use either jewel cases that you cut down, or find some
DVD cases with the push-to-release mechanism that you could use?

Small ones are available at nearly all the major mail order US
suppliers. A search on their sits for media rack will usually return
them.
Make sure you check it will work vertically if you need that feature.
I was unable to find a source for long cassette holders in the US to
be used vertically.
