Folks I have done many hours of mental tradeoffs on whether to buy the
Delta 14" X bandsaw, the Powermatic 14CS, or the Laguna LT14SE. Perhaps
I need to see a therapist????
The real question is whether the Laguna is worth the extra money.
One review I read likened the Laguan to a cabinet makers table saw and
the Delta.Powermatic to contractors saws.
The Laguna is superior in many ways, but as a hobbyist woodworker, I'm
not convinced the extra performance is worth it.
One real attraction to the Laguna is the resaw capability: 12" and a 1"
blade with 2 HP. I'm told the cut is so smooth, very little sanding or
planing is needed.
I now have the money and it's burning a hole in my pocket.
What say y'all?
What is the cost difference?
That aside, buy the one you want if you have the money. Laguna make an
excellent BS and I know this because I own one (LT 18). I'm happy with
my purchase and would do it again. I'm not familiar with the
Powermatic but I didn't like the Delta one very much. I wanted
something that would resaw well without a lot of fuss.

Delta/Powermatic:
$900 for the saw
$100 for the mobile base
+ blades
0 shipping (Amazon)
---------------------------
$1000 + blades (+ fence for Delta)
Laguna LT14SE:
$1200 for the saw
$90 for the base
$100 for the mobile unit
+ blades
$150 shipping ( a guess)
---------------------------
$1540 + blades
Difference of approx $500.

I have the Delta and overall am pretty
satisfied with it. I have done some
resawing, but always thought it would
be nice to have a 1 inch carbide tipped blade
for that kind of work.
Since you have the money, I think I would
get the Laguna if I were in your shoes.

The paralysis will only accrue by asking this group for advise. If budget
allows, I would get a 16" or 18". I have the Jet 16" and I've never
regretted the move.

Buy the Delta X5. Unlike some of the Delta saws, this one is still made
in the USA and uses every part that the original 1939 unit used. In
other words, you have a HUDGE parts resource to draw on. It also now
comes with a 1.5 HP motor, the same one in fact that the Delta
contractors saw uses. You can wire it for 220 V and it will produce 2HP.
As for service, just look in the back of a Delta book for the listing of
Hundreds of service locations. Any one can help you. I know Delta is
undergoing some "changes" lately, but BLACK & DECKER has taken a hands
off approach toward these industrial tools, and have committed to
improving the line, according to my sources....( and BTW I don't work
for Delta, only been a service center for the last 35 years...)

A few weeks back, I was at woodworking show that among other things, had a
Laguna bandsaw display. I was amazed by the veneer thin strips that it was
able to cut off an 8" x 12" block of hardwood. I don't own a bandsaw, so for
all I know, all makes of bandsaws could be capable of this type of
performance, but I was still suitably impressed.

If you buy from Laguna be prepared for a wait and not much in the way of
customer information..I'm going on 5 months now and have yet to see mine and
have been told 4 different delivery dates.Going in I knew there was a three
month wait.I don't find their sales folks to be helpful after the sale and
you're treated like an intruder if you inquire or question them..It has not
been a good experience thus far and you can see others with similar dilemas
on their message board..I'd look at the Rincoh at Woodcraft if I had it to
do over again..Just my 2cents,Rick
