If I were you, I would stick with a major manufacturer like Mamiya. If you
want to buy new, Mamiya has a 645 camera with manual everything in that
price range. If used is an option I would try the used camera sections of
Calumet, B&H or go to the Midwest Camera Exchange website. All three of
these dealers rate the used cameras and guarantee the cameras for at least
30 days, which is long enough to see if they at least work when you receive
them. I personally would not buy on eBay because as reputable as a seller
may be, they may not even be aware of a problem with the equipment they
sell, particularly if they haven't used it in a while.
My understanding, even from Kiev dealers, is that Kiev quality varies
greatly from camera to camera. If you buy one, buy from a dealer that will
take it back you have problems.
A fellow student at Otis art college bought a Seagull and got some good
results with it.
If you think you want to use the camera long term buy something that will
make you happy for years to come instead of a starter camera like a Kiev or
a Seagull that you will want to replace soon with something better.

If you want to try MF photography for cheap do the following: Search eBay
for Flexaret camera (III, IV, VI, VII). These are about $40.00 cameras with
an excellent reputation!!! I use mine (Flexaret IV is best) for about 20
years and it will do what Mamiya will do as well. The shop in Prague is a
Professional photo shop and they wouldn't sell you a bad camera. You can
always trust them. Flexaret is an older after the worl war II technology,
but it is very precise equipment with prontor shutter! The German wated to
purchase this factory long time ago. Ten times better that some Kiev,
Heartblai, Holga or other brands.
I was in Prague this spring and they had about 28 of them on the shelve. I
should've got another one. I recommend this to anyone that would like to
play with medium format camera and get professional results! You will need a
tripod and light meter. It is manual camera but awsome workhorse.

Dunno what this is doing in a woodworking forum, but I just bought a Yashica
Mat 124G 120/220 roll film camera from ebay. It's in great shape, with almost
no wear, and I paid under $100 (barely) including shipping.
I used one of these back in the '70s, and got some fine photos. And it has a
meter, though you do have to find a Wein 1.35 volt battery for it as there are
no more mercury batteries (suggestion: do NOT buy the batteries off ebay, as
they're about 1/4 the price of the Buy Now at reputable U.S. camera dealers).

One of these?

I hope you got spools with it, last few I had sold for about $10 a pop
on eBay. But then those spools were still sealed in foil.

Got one spool, which is all it needs. After that, you get a spool with every
roll. Anyone who pays 10 bucks a pop for spools would do better checking
somewhere for outdated film. Buy all you need for 2-3 bucks a roll, strip one
roll off, and use the spool.

A used Mamiya 645 can be gotten for a lot less the $1000. I've heard good
things about the Kiev. (yea the bodies leave a lot to be desired but the
lenses are top rate)
: The Seagull TLR is a nice toy to have as extra, for the grab 'n shoot
: action, not real alternative to the real thing though.
The Seagull is a piece of junk and of lower quality then the Kiev.

I'm really happy with my Bronica SQA (6x6).

I would advise to go for the Mamiya, very flexible, widely sold so a lot of
used equipment available at reasonable pricing and a LOT better quality than
the Kiev.

mamya 654...perfect!
Mamiya or Pentax if you like focal plane shutters, Bronica if you prefer the
faster sync speed of a leaf shutter. Don't bother with stuff like Kiev and
Seagull...if you're really watching your budget, get a used Yashicamat 124G
or a Rolleiflex ($$$) or Rolleicord.
