A machinery manufacturer has asked me to check whether any West Coast USA
woodworkers who use worm drive saws would be willing to participate in a 30
second open opinion question survey to help improve the quality and
functionality of the next generation of worm drive saws.
If anyone here fits the bill and doesn't mind donating 30 seconds of their
time, send me an email at [email protected]
Cheers!

Gimme a break. If they only want the opinions of west coast
woodworkers its a marketing ploy aimed at west coast woodworkers. How
much are they paying you to collect e-mail addresses?

Probably the reason is simple: Gear drive circular saws are about 75 times more
popular on the Left Coast than anywhere else. No idea why, but that's been a
truism for many years. I remember my first wife's cousin showing up in Dutchess
County NY, back some 30+ years ago, with the second such saw I'd ever seen.

He wasn't. It was just over thirty years ago that I bought mine
to restore my first home (On Vassar Road in Poughkeepsie - also
in Dutchess County). The saw is still in use and going strong.
Interestingly, it seems to do a little better job every year (and
has been performing much better in IA than it ever did in NY 8^)

At that point in my life, I'd seen damned little carpentry work outside of
downstate NY and the Rhinebeck/Clinton Township area, so I'd seen one other
such saw, though it probably wasn't yours, as I first saw one sometime in the
mid-'60s down in Westchester. IIRC, a guy in Amawalk, not far from where my
mother lived then, had it.

For what it's worth, I certainly would not have posted the request if it was
solely for customer hunting purposes.
The request was made on behalf of a manufacturer who is generally interested
in provided unique, usable features
in their upcoming production of worm drive saw models.
I can understand your concern of course. I probably would have initially
thought the same if I was on the other end :)

So, Dean....
Who is the manufacturer?

Well, if their interest was really to "help improve the quality and
functionality of the next generation of worm drive saws" they should
be interested in you first wife's cousin's input. Even if he was the
only guy in NY who owned one. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but
these saws are very popular in the construction industry here in S.
Fl.
To target a survey like this to any particular area makes it seem more
likely the work of a dealer looking for customers. Just my opinion of
course.

And you may be correct. But they may also be trying to work efficiently. No
idea how they're distributing the survey, but it's probably simpler to confine
it to a geographical area in which they know a lot of people are using the saw.
If they want Pete, they'd have to get back to him in CA. He stayed in NY just
long enough to do the job he was hired to do, and headed back to Marin County.
