Part of the fun of doing mine a couple of years ago was starting from a
clean sheet of paper, and a scraped piece of ground, and going from there.
My father's generation seemed only to use a yellow legal pad, a framing
square, and some hand tools, and they built some great stuff. I was
privileged as a lad to watch and 'help'. Some of that attitude rubbed off
on me. Talking with my Dad, I'm pretty sure that was part of the plan.
The great part about tubafors is that they cost maybe $2.50, almost
everyone carries them, and they fit in the back of almost any vehicle. An
extra $25 bucks isn't likely to kill a project, if you screw up, and there
are a lot of uses for short pieces, even in a shed.
There are a great many other opportunities for cost over runs, but you will
likely see them coming soon enough to avoid them. I'd watch out for things
like drainage, septic, electrical and communications lines in the planning
process. We owned a home, about 15 years ago, where the previous owner had
built a master bedroom addition, with a pier resting on top of an abandoned
septic tank. The inspector wonder where the pier had disappeared to, when
he inspected the crawl space....
