Husband Killed Was Reservist Just Back From Mideast
Wife, Teens Charged In Millbrook Exchange Park Murder

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The wife of a Navy Reserve member who had just returned
from the Middle East is charged with killing her husband with the help of
two 18-year-old men.
Paul Berkley, 46, of Clayton died in a hospital hours after he was shot in
the head in a city park early Sunday. His wife, Monique Berkley, 26, was
wounded in the shoulder.
Monique Berkley, 26, was arrested Monday on a murder warrant. Andrew Canty,
18; and Latwon Johnson, 18, were charged with first-degree murder.
Police gave few details about the shooting, saying that Monique Berkley
called for help on her cell phone at 3 a.m. Sunday, directing officers down
a wooded path to where she and her husband lay wounded.
Paul Berkley had returned from duty in the Middle East just three days
before he was killed, relatives and friends said.
"He was over there getting shot at, and he comes home to get shot," said
Chaz Jutting of Apex, a fellow Navy reservist. "It's just unreal."
Canty and Johnson asked for lawyers to be appointed in their hearings
Monday; none had been named by late evening. Both were held without bail.
Monique Berkley, arrested Monday at WakeMed hospital, was to be arraigned
Tuesday.
Paul Berkley married the former Monique Wheeler -- his third wife -- about
five years ago in Las Vegas, according to her mother, Susan Wheeler. The
California native moved his family, including a teenage son and daughter, to
Clayton in 2003 to be closer to his wife's relatives.
"Monique is our family, and we love her. We can't imagine in any
circumstances the chain of events that led to this tragedy," Wheeler said in
a statement issued on behalf of her family Monday night.
"Monique has no history of violence and comes from a loving and caring
family. We are truly saddened by Paul's death."
Jutting said Paul Berkley deployed to the Middle East in January with a
Raleigh-based Navy Reserve unit that specialized in moving equipment from
ship to shore. The group was based in Bahrain but often ran missions to
Kuwait and Iraq.
While he was gone, he asked Jutting to check in on his wife, who was left to
take care of his children, Becky and Ezekiel. Jutting said Monique Berkley
always told him she was doing well.
Canty's mother said her son met Monique Berkley last year when he attended
Clayton High School with her stepchildren. Johnson, now attending East
Carolina University, began dating Becky Berkley.
"She didn't sit right with me from the moment I met her," Christine Canty
said. "It bothered me because she was older, and I wondered why she was
hanging out with my son. He figured he was a grown man and could do what he
wanted."
Canty told his mother this year that he had begun a sexual relationship with
Monique Berkley, and he moved in with her in April -- three months after her
husband shipped out, Christine Canty said. He returned to her home a day
after Paul Berkley returned.
