Seems to me this Craftsman saw would be a step up from what you have,
but still not a "just cry once" kind of tool. In other words, if you
really continue to stay involved in woodworking as a hobby, you'd
probably eventually want to replace that Craftsman with something
nicer. Keep watching eBay, local classifieds, auctions, estate sales,
Craigslist, etc. for good deals. In my opinion (take it for what it's
worth), you should either buy a really good quality saw now (i.e. more
than $500, with high-end rock-solid fence etc.), or save up your $
until you can.
If you just need to joint something flat, practice with your router +
straightedge or your current tablesaw until it's flat. Owning good
machines certainly don't make someone a good woodworker - they key is
to use your head and figure it out to make it work with the tools you
have (or the tools you can currently afford).
Again, just my opinions and my experience.
Good luck,
Andy

Maybe, one thing to watch out for with the Craftsman stuff is they can
be proprietery. You may not be able to use an aftermarket miter guage
or fence. Also make sure it can accept a stacked dado set.
good luck.

Mine appears to be a later model with a better quality rip fence. It's
a good saw (not great, but not as bad as some on this group would have
you believe), but expect to spend some money on a good quality rip fence
and rail for it, and a better miter gauge too. I got a good miter gauge
at Woodcraft for about $50, IIRC.
You might want to look for a newer model with the better rip fence,
since a decent rip fence can be pretty expensive - $150 and up, I think.
The price seems reasonable - mine cost $400 plus tax at the Sears store
two years ago.

Looks like one I endured for 25 years or so. I sold mine, with a bad motor,
for $45 about two years ago Things I didn't like:
- 1 HP motor was too weak
- Mine had sheet metal wings which are a little flimsy
- Fence absolutely sucked, sucked, sucked.
- No dust collection (but that can be helped with an add-on bag or box)
- The mitre gage is tolerable (about the same as a lot of other orig. equip
gages).
On the other hand this one does have the open cast-iron wings which are a
plus. The motor appears to be new or rebuilt ((or painted) new ones are
expensive). However a 2hp motor would be much better. If you plan to do
any serious work start searching for a good aftermarket or salvaged fence
(Biesmeir, Shop Fox, Jet, Delta, etc.). The alternate is constantly
checking alignment and measuring from fence to slots.
I guess, at the end of the day, $149.99 (and not much more) might form the
basis of an upgrade. I see these or similar in the local newspaper in this
price range almost weekly.

Well, partly it depends on what condition it is in. Assuming it is in good
condition...
Saws like that with 16a motors and decent fences for for $200-$250.
Don't know what the motor is; it looks big, but that doesn't mean much.
The fence is crap. Since a new fence is over $100, I would say it is a bad
deal, regardless of the motor.
I bought the "same" saw with a new 18a motor, a new fence, a base, and an
oversized magnetic switch for $250; but that was a particularly good buy.

Again, check out the guy in Scottsville. He has a bandsaw, table saw, radial
arm saw too. I didn't pay attention to the prices.
That saw is made by Emerson Tool and is probably a decent deal at $150. The
problem is that auction has nearly 4 days left and no bidders yet, so it's
not likely to stay at $150. Once it gets up over $200 it's no longer a very
attractive deal. You might be wise to wait until the auction is nearly
completed and put in a bid that maxes out at around $175. Then if you get
it for that price or less you have done well, and if you get out bid, just
move on.
