Proposal to JOAT

JOAT: You have been a nuisance to this group for some time. You post
in ALL CAPS without any regard to anyone else. You promote website
links, and you even keep illegal copywritten music files on that web
site of yours and you use this newsgroup to promote piracy.

MY OFFER: Like they used to say in the Wild Wild West, get out of town
before sundown and I will do the same. In English, if you stop posting
on this newsgroup, so will I. You have my word on this. If you reply
and agree to this, I will never post to the WRECK again as long as you
do not either. Do we have deal?

This is unfortunately a sad commentary on society. Now instead of the
big mouth wise ass getting shot dead in the street, they hide behind
semi anonymous email address. Similar to when a 4 year old hides behind
his mothers dress, you know he is there but you can't see him. I'll bet
that he still uses the phrase "I know you but what am I?" to fight with
his peers. He must be a real jewel in chat rooms. Appears to me that
Mr. spamblocked is still hiding behind his mothers dress, perhaps even
living at home because he is too insecure to find a job of any kind.

I hope that at some point in the future ISPs become socially responsible
and either require some sort of identification for email accounts or
take the responsibility for tracking the posts to the real IP address
and inform the parents of the content of messages being transmitted.
This can be done but the ISPs find it too much trouble.

JOAT, I have found many of your posts informative and some of your
links are in my bookmark file. Don't stop, we can't let the sniveling
little weasels win, whatever their supposed agenda. We don't need any
web police here, we can handle our own.

I am not talking about his opinions but his postings. I am assuming
that you understand he is the one responsible for the recent trash in an
otherwise cooperative newsgroup (one of the few left)? He has the right
to filter JOAT, just are we have the right to filter him. That is the
end of his rights.

I had not thought about school holidays, that may be why the posts at
all hours.

With all the litagation in this country you would think that there would
be a way to start a legal battle with the more irreponsible ISPs. I
would think that a $ drain might have the same effect as a $ gain.

I don't want to know his address but I would like his address
blacklisted from all future anonymous accounts and his parents advised
of the behavior (assuming they care).

Wed, Oct 1, 2003, 9:20pm (EDT-3) [email protected] (Spam=A0Blocked)
decided to research and post:

Well, well, Buttercup. This is indeed an interesting post. Since
you took the time and effort to post it, I figure the least I can do is
to respond to it. It does raise a lot of questions, but I'll just go
thru your post one part at a time with my response, and/or questions.

JOAT: You have been a nuisance to this group for some time.

Well, I have been on this newgroup for a few years now. I don't
know if you mean I have been a nuisance all that time, or some lesser
period of time. Can you explain? Also, you don't state whether I have
been a nuisance to the whole group, for the entire amount of time I have
accussed of being a nuisance, to several individuals, just you, or what.
Can you explain? Also, a nuisance in what way? One way? Several ways?
Hmm? You know, details?

And, just how long have you been associated with rec.woodworking?
I did a google search, and only found 3 posts on record, including this
thread, with two of them cross-posted, so don't know if they count or
not.
http://groups.google.com/groups?safe=3Dimages&ie=3DISO-8859-1&as_ugroup=3D=
rec.woodworking&[email protected]&lr=3D&num=3D30&hl=3De=
n

In one of those posts you also praised the self-styled Puppy
Wizard, and took it upon yourself to do so in the name of all of the
rec.woodworking group. I certainly didn't give you authorization or
permission to speak in my behalf, and no one else I know of did either.
So what was your authority?

You post in ALL CAPS without any regard to anyone else.

Let's see now. I've been typing for about 49 years now, learned in
high school. Worked for 9 years with mid-size main-frame computers.
And, have had my WebTV for a number of years. In all that time I have
never typed using all caps that I can recall. Can you offer proof of
you claim?

You promote website links,

No. I post links, I don't promote any of them. There is a big
difference.

and you even keep illegal copywritten music files on that web site of
yours

Wrong again. I don't have any music files on my web site, period.
I do have a list of links to music there. Public access links.
However, if any copyright owner prefers I don't do this with his/her
music, all they have to do is ask. They'll have to be able to back up
their claim it's their's tho, I won't do it just because someone makes
an unsubstantiated claim.

and you use this newsgroup to promote piracy.

I would like to know where you ever got such a silly idea as that?
I never have, and never will, support brigandage. I know that many
places in the world still suffer pirates, and that with their small,
fast boats, and weapons, are exceedingly difficult to catch, but I
firmly believe people should be alble to sail the oceans and waters of
the world without the fear of piracy. I am totally against any pirates,
except movie pirates.

MY OFFER: Like they used to say in the Wild Wild West, get out of town
before sundown and I will do the same.

What part of, and what time frame, of the Wild Wild West, was that
said? I never heard of it. Was it in a move? Cartoon?

In English, if you stop posting on this newsgroup, so will I. You have
my word on this. If you reply and agree to this, I will never post to
the WRECK again as long as you do not either. Do we have deal?

Well, this all raises even more questions. As I stated above, I
only found your name on 3 posts here. However, when I expanded the
search, I found a number more posts, including some very much like our
current crop of troll posts. In English, obscene, abusive, off-topic,
sensless, childish, etc, ad nauseum.
http://groups.google.com/groups?safe=3Dimages&ie=3DISO-8859-1&as_uauthors=3D=
[email protected]&lr=3D&num=3D30&hl=3Den

Given this, it looks very much like you could be one of the recent
troll posters, or the only one, just changing your name. How can I be
sure that isn't true? And, it it is true, how could I be certain you
wouldn't come back, and post some more unwanted posts, using a different
name?
You ask me to accept your word, but what have I got to base trust on?
Nothing that I can see.

And, then there is the question on why, you chose me to try to
force off of rec.woodworking. There certainly are people on there who
are much more of a nuisance than me. The recent spate of toads posting
trash for example. Why not pick on them. Oops, if it's you, I guess
you wouldn't pick on yourself. But, again, why me? If I annoy you, you
can just put me in your killfile. But, you neglected to do that. Why?
Is it because I am confident in my abilities, willing to post plans,
inelligent, feel good about myself as a person, or maybe you just think
because I use WebTV that I am someone you can push around with immunity?
I may, or may not, leave rec.woodworking. It has certainly lost a lot
of entertainment value lately, even before the recent troll influx.
But, you're gonna have to come up with something convincing, before I
leave just because you want me to.

Have a nice day, Buttercup.

But we like him. His posts have benifited myself and others I know
personally.

And you are the sum total of your postings. Who is next after joat, me?
Or the next person that asks for free plans. If you are so good and
noble can you do something about all these profane posts that are
forcing parents to keep the children away. That is all they are doing.

I don't even try to filter your posts. They are too easily ignored. We
are what we post. If you think otherwise, you are as immature as your
posts suggest. I suppose you go to sleep at night actually thinking your
doing something "good". So rest well. If I knew you personally I would
probably agree with you this is the biggest project you have undetaken
in your life and would be very proud of you. If you ever have a sober
moment. Look in the mirror. I don't evn know a child that would
associate themselves with what you do. Ifyou have todo something in
secret, isn't that a sign.

Looking forward to you keeping up your self-esteem through your postings.

By default most are wrong. And all they have to do is implement
reverse SMTP checks at the router level. Stop it dead on the
very first hop. No overhead whatsoever, when you compare it to all
the immense overhead of all the spam that's been going on in the
last three weeks or so. In the thousands of Tb! Who's paying for all
that wasted bandwidth? You and I, because sure enough the ISPs don't
give a royal damn.

And yes, "official" sites are some of the worst offenders.
I use an anonymous proxy from one of those to browse without
trace. It's so wide open it fails even the most basic tests
in www.grc.com! That's what we get for putting trainees and
incompetents at the head of IT. Or willy-nilly outsourcing

As far as I'm concerned, the best thing to come out of the seventies
was the initial publication of Fine Woodworking. Paul Roman was
Editor/Publisher. Tage Frid and Bruce Hoadley were Contributing
Editors. When I first saw it - I was enthralled.

It was in Black and White and had the look and feel of a fine art
periodical.

It, more than anything else, made me want to become a craftsman.

I'm missing some of the early issues. I once owned all of them but
time and the kind of moving around that young men do has left holes in
the collection.

I'm looking at issue #2 as I type this. It cost $2.50. It came out
only four times a year and I could hardly wait for each one to come
out. It was my connection to the real deal.

I was a young carpenter at that time. I was building what were
considered high end houses in our area, then. Two by four walls,
Celotex in the field and ply in the corners. Cost, about fifty
thousand dollars. Never saw anything other than a simple pitched
roof.

Our typical trim was Clamshell or Colonial. A baseboard was three and
a half inches high. Never saw much in the way of crown molding.
Kitchen cabinets were either built onsite (boxes without backs) or off
the rack stuff. And kitchens were small rooms in those days.

FWW showed me what could be done using a lot of the same tools that I
already owned. It also showed me a lot of tools that I'd never heard
of. (Woodcraft had an adv. but they were still in Woburn and prolly
still run by people who knew what the hell they were about).

Saw my first Garrett Wade adv. in the mag and ordered my first
non-Stanley tools from them. What a revelation.

When Taunton came out with FHB in the eighties, it kind of
sacramentalised the carpentry in the way that FWW had done for the
finer work.

FWW and FHB have changed a lot. I'm of an age now where I could be
writing for them, rather than just reading them. I still buy them
both but don't get the same pump that I did twenty or thirty years
ago.

I guess we've both changed.

Mine kind of got glued together. I had them stored in milk crates in my
basement, even up on 2x4s for good luck. Unfortunately, one lovely wet day
after about five other lovely wet days, the septic tank backed up. The
resulting rise was enough to glue the bottom 3-4" of the FWWs and many other
magazines together. I really liked those magazines, but not enough to separate
the pages after long immersion in liquid shit.

I just took a bunch of the old B&W's to my youngest brother (45) to read
through while he recovers from open heart surgery. Years ago I was able
to glom onto a bunch of back issues from Taunton. I was able to get
issue #1 but #2 was sold out. The B&W's are really classics, do you
remember the hell that was raised by some of the readers of the time
when they went to color pages?

Hum.... Who am I to argue?

In any case, I have to admit that being an old and cynical
product of the 50s, All I could think about when "Windows ME" came out
was that it was VERY appropriately named. one of the "hot phrases"
when I was in my teens was "F**k me!" - an exclamation usually
produced at that moment when one realized that thye had JUST had
it stuck to them in one way or another.

Well, I must admit for once google reacted quickly.
It only took them 48 hours this time to nail this
particular bastard:
<QUOTE>
The Google Groups account you reported for Usenet abuse has been
suspended. We appreciate your aid in keeping the newsgroups as abuse free
as possible..
Sincerely,
The Google Groups Team
</QUOTE>

But they need to do a LOT better. They need to BLOCK this
bastard from EVER getting another address with them and then
REPORT him to the abuse address he used to sign on to google.
Which in turn should do EXACTLY the same. Follow the chain and
these idiots would be gone in no time.
No valid abuse address when they sign on? Sorry, no account.

It's really simple. And the argument that it's too much "volume"
to treat this way is bogus as can be: most of the sign-up mechanism
is automatic anyway and adding these checks is trivial.
Do this for a while and I'll guarantee the "volume" will drop to 0.

Like I said: put a cost on it and they'll immediately find a way.
Make the ISPs liable for the bandwidth costs of carrying spammers and
I'll guarantee they'll immediately "find a way" to implement the
checks...

Actually not that easy. Outgoing mail is SMTP. By default most use
anonymous SMTP. And there are numerous on the web. An example of this is the
ARMY (yes that one) keeps several of them up.
