My local hardware store doesn't carry 1/4 of what Lowes or HD carry. I
still spend a few bucks there. I buy all my outdoor power equipment at a
local hardware store.
I remember one time pricing a 12" abrasive blade at HD and not buying it.
$5 or $6. I was at the local hardware store and decided to buy it. $15.
Guess which store I bought it at? Not everything is that bad.

You've never asked at the Contractor's desk. If they're busy, they'll
call someone to help you, but if not, they'll either look it up and
give you the aisle number and approximate position or actually leave
the security of their counter <g> and walk you right to the parts you
need, no trouble. That said, I've had more Lowes drones ask me if I
needed any help, and often they were more savvy of their store
inventory than the HD drones. My nearest Lowes is 25 miles away while
the nearest HD is over 100, so guess where I shop.

The NAPA around here is worse than the HD you go to. <sigh> One guy in
front with 3 customers, 2 guys within view of all of us, both shootin'
the shit all the while.

are slightly more expensive, but they do have the weird one off things
that I occassionally need (kind of like NAPA when I'm doing automotive
work). These are just my observations, and seems to be consistent with
the people I've spoken with around here.

We have a Lowe's and HD across the street from each other 20 miles away
(they're building a new HD about 10 miles away). Almost every time I
go, Lowe's is packed, HD is empty. There never seems to be anyone at
the Contractor's desk in the HD, and 2-3 at the Lowe's. Guess they
don't need as many people working at HD since they don't have as many
customers :)

That's typical of any NAPA I've seen, but they always have those oddball
items you need, IF you can just get them to assist you.

I like Lowes better. I leave the store with more needed items than
with Home Depot. Of course, that can be different in another
location.

But between Lowes and Home Depot...I prefer the local Lowes ...My wife
on the other had prefers Home Depot...(??? we shop for different
things I guess) ...
But last year Home Depot opened a second store in town...and my wife
prefers to shop at Lowes over the New Home Depot... so she would rank
the 3 stores ..

Having just bought another house, HD conveniently had this wonderful
sale with 10%, free delivery, plus those dang gift card thingies. So,
I bought some kitchen appliances there instead of the local appliance
place, where I would normally shop.
Did notice that Lowes had a better selection on the floor, but they
can order about anything.
Also noticed that Lowes had a better selection in lighting and ceiling
fans, so I asked them to match the HD coupon for 10% and got some nice
lighting there.
I think Lowes comes across a little "classier" and HD more down to
earth. HD seems to have improved though I can't put my finger on
exactly where. Was a time I wouldn't go in the place.
HD seems to have more selection in the contractor type parts (plumbing
odds n ends, etc.), Lowes in the home design stuff (appliances,
lighting, etc.).
But for the out of the mainstream you gotta go to a local shop. e.g.
needed a laundry sink faucet. Lowes and HD carry some chinzy ones
that I wasn't happy with. A local plumbing supply place had a nice
brass, solidly built (in the USA no less) faucet, plus the shut off
valve I was looking for, plus a lot of helpful chatter. But, they
also sold solder in 1# rolls and 1/4" copper pipe in way long lengths.
Back to HD/Lowes for those.
BTW, this is in the Maryland 'burbs of DC.
