Not exactly woodworking, but it involved wood, so it's sort of on-topic...
I'm back early because we're Cub Scouts, and that means we don't have to
stay after everybody's tent leaks and all the sleeping bags get wet. :)
Today was Webelos to the Woods. Some of you know what I'm talking about.
So anyway, the Boy Scouts were doing these skill demonstrations for the
Webelos, and one of them involved axe and hatchet work. One of the boys in
our den arranged to get me hauled into the ring to have at the log (about
10" diameter tulip poplar) with the axe and finish cutting through it.
It was an unfamiliar axe, and frankly it's nuts to chop through a log that
big instead of sawing it, but I stepped up to the plate and took a whack at
it. In surprisingly little time, I had cleaved it most of the way in two.
The boys set up a chant of "Go Mr. McIntyre, go, go, go!!" after I got
winded and faltered a bit. (I don't think I'll ever get used to being
called "Mr. McIntyre.") I found the strength to keep at it, and finished
it off in short order, to raucous cheering.
Afterwards, the boys from our pack took turns lugging that stupid log all
the way up through all the switchbacks back to our campsite way up on the
hill.
I'm glad I was able to do that well, and make my son proud.
Today was a really good day. :)

If you're out there leading the little cretins, then you
have earned the title. Good on you.
Besides, telling them that "Mr. McIntyre" was your fathers
name would probably be lost on them.

Officially I'm a committee member, but I double as a pseudo assistant den
leader. Being a truck driver doesn't make it easy, but I do as much as I
can. We have to wear a lot of hats in this bunch. Not enough of us to go
around.

Mr. McIntyre is my grandfather. My father's name is Dad. :)
