how about vertical &/or H strips, with brass/ shiny nickel beaded keychain,
tub stopper link stuff. You can buy at least the OO connectors (end to end
connect), and end to washer (say screw to wall)
O=o=O (fold).

or thin wire, w/ crimping end loops

I'd suggest 1/8" aircraft birch plywood, you can buy small overpriced
pieces at hobby shops or order it online.
Then you can cover it with whatever veneers you like.
I am amazed to see 3-ply plywood as thin as 1/64". That's
thinner than a lot of decoritve veneer.

It's not clear how old your daughter is and whether she needs a woman's
occasional purse, or a child that needs a play-grown-up purse. I'd
probably approach either one the same way and just make the fit and
finish to suit your daughter.
I'd probably start with gluing up contrasting wood pieces in an
interesting design for the front and back sides, leaving them a bit
thick so they could be shaped for curved exterior and interior. The
sides could be glued to a U-shaped frame, and either a hinged top or
I'd make the top seperately with two holes so that it would slide up
and down on the purse strings. The lid is the most likely thing to get
broken, so I'd probably opt for the latter.
If you have access to a bandsaw you could built it like a bandsawn box
which would simplify the construction.

hmm.you might look at going thiner and use a canvas backing that you
glue onto the wood. Think of it like an odd shaped roll top for a
desk. I'd try one that way from pieced together scrap wood to test
the weight of the project.

I have seen some patterns for berry baskets in scroll saw magazines
that could be adapted. They used layers of wood, some colored, some
natural.

How about using narrow strips of various species of veneer?
Weave them together like a basket and lace the edges together
with cane. You could even dye the strips beforehand for even
more color.
