Making A Walking Cane

Recently I lost my cane. Don't need it 99% of the time, but if the
knee goes, need it right then, so've taken to carrying a cane. Then
lost it. Apparently I set it on the top of the cab of my trucklet while
putting my mail in at the post office, then forgot it. Went back later,
but couldn't find it. So had to buy another. The last one ran me about
$14-15. This one cost right at $20, a sizeable jump. So decided to
make at least one spare.

Remebered this link, and thought about using it.
http://arbortechusa.com/upload/pdfs/walking-sticks.pdf Nah, I'd rather
just come up with something on my own, after all, it ain't rocket
science. So, decided to glue up some of the oak flooring the older son
gave me, overlapping pieces, tracing my present cane, and go from there.

Before I started gluing up, found out the pieces of flooring
weren't really square at the ends. No prob, I got a power mitre saw
from HF awhile back. It works great. Found out that if I just zip thru
the pieces, it leave a slightly splintery cut. Cutting thru a bit
slower gives a nice smooth non-splintery cut. I May be able to finish
up the glueup tomorrow, maybe the next day. Then I get the fun of
shapping it.

I talked to the older son this evening, and mentioned it to him.
He asked if I was going to round it in my lathe. Slap forehead, say the
obligatory"Doh". Never even thought of it. But, no prob. I'll get it
cut then run it thru the planer a few passes - should probably have
done that before the glue up, but forgot. Nex time. Anyway, once I've
got the thing cut out I'll probably round it with a surform. I figure
I'll probably wind up making at least one or two more, spares you know,
so this one is basically a learning experience.

Got the wood free, all this will be costing me is a minimal cost
for the glue, and my time. Can't beat that. Not sure if I'll leave it
natural, or thin some latex paint way down, and use it as a stain -
custom color mixed, of course.

Hah. Yeah. Just like me. That's all I really need a cane for these
days.

In fact, I just had a book come out on that very subject, but...when
it came time to get one for myself (the publisher still has the
samples I sent), I looked on eBay and found a guy selling white ash
canes, three for $15.95 plus some reasonable shipping. I was pleased
with what I got, coated one with golden oak stain and some poly, and
stashed the other two for when I pull a JOAT and lose the first one.
Which I will.

Probably would have helped to know that a couple of days ago. I
hang mine on my arm now, instead of setting it on the roof.

Charlie,

I received your new book "Make your Own Walking Sticks" as a gift from
my wife. I found it very useful; I would never thought to laminate the
wood for a cane instead of steam bending. Great book: Bravo Zulu

Yellow?

The final decision has not yet been made. Yellow is definitely
still in the running.

What I'm actually gonna do is use thinned latex paint, thin enough
to be more stain than paint. Mostt likely a "custom" stain. Screaming
Zonker Yellow comes to mind.

My situation is similar. Most of the time I use the cane to beat off
young women who seem to go into a sexual frenzy at the sight of my
wrinkles and white hair/beard. :)

Put your glasses on. It's probably old women, with pockets full of
viagra.

Sounds like a case of sour grapes. On the off chance that JT might be
right, leave your glasses on the workbench!

No grapes here. That's what viagra was invented for, so old women
could get old men to have sex with them.

Either way, there's a lot of beating off going on.
