There are quite a few messages posted with INSPIRATION in the title and
most seem to be posted by the same person. The INSPIRATION in the
title certaily makes them easy to read/ignore at the readers choice but
there are still a lot of them.
Of the ones that I have looked at, most are not my cup of tea but I
respect the poster's right to post them as they are certainly on-topic.
I am just wondering if it might not be a good idea to setup a seperate
group/list for these types of posts (Similar to ABPW for pics).
Thoughts anyone? JOAT, thoughts?
Again, not suggesting NOT to post them but perhaps have a central place
to put them as opposed to the larger group.

This one keeps coming back from time to time - kinda like herpes.
I like checking out JOAT's stuff - some of them are funny - some of
them are dumb - some of them are cool.
I can tell you this much for sure - JOAT's gonna keep on doing what he
does no matter what anybody else thinks - and that's what I like about

I don't - and perhaps others - don't use a traditional newsreader app
but browse via a web browser (groups.google.com). I have seen posts in
the past where people comment on the volume of messages and bandwidth
concerns so I don't see why this question is so unusual. I am NOT
attacking him or his posts simply asking - what I thought - was a
reasonable question.

Dave, wow - I apologize that I have very clearly offended you on this
one. However, I think that you are missing my point. I mean NO
ill-will towards him and I am not asking him to change what he does for
me (regardelss of my choice of news interface) but decided to post a
question to the group for consideration. Again, I mearly asked what I
thought was a reasonable question to the broader group. The posts so
far have been overwhelmingly in favor of his continuing to post his
inspiration messages here. Great, the question I asked appears to have
been aswered. As far as my asking HIM to go away - not the case at
all. He posts other things besides the inspiration posts to this group
just like everyone else does.
And to address your point of "...how your choice of a piss-poor
interface to read Usenet should dictate
that a useful resource is made less useful for everyone.." - I actually
think another newsgroup for THIS TYPE OF POST (not just posts from this
person) would make the resource more useful to everyone as it would be
more easily searchable etc.
Dave, at this point I think we are arguing semantics instead of
substance. Might I suggest that we either aggree to disagree or take
the discussion private (email in header is real). I would welcome the
opportunity to continue if you like.
I DO know how to use Google, I DO know that there are newsreaders out
there that filter, I DO NOT want the inspiration posts to go away
entirely I was just inquiring about moving/grouping them is all.
To all the comments "get a normal newsreader", you live in a
cloistered, home based world. I travel every week and I'm on hotel and
client networks throughout the week. There is NO way to use an offline
newsreader in these firewalled, restricted environments. You have to
use a web based approach to reading. So what's the big deal?
Well, on days like Monday, when there were 35 (yes 35!) inspiration
posts, I had to wade through nine screenfuls of the stuff to find other
messages buried in there. Selfish? You bet. I'm not alone. There are
thousands of people like me who travel and have limited tools on the
road to enjoy the news groups. Its about balance. 35 a day is out of
balance.

Nine screenfulls? Let's see, 35 posts divided by 9 would be
slightly under 4 posts per screen. Small screen? They were not all in
one lump sum, there were other posts in between.
Thousands on rec.woodworking? Probably not.
Balance? 35 inspiration posts in one day was a one time deal.
Probably. It was a good day. Of course, on a good day, when I was
doing a lot of personal searches, I have been know to post about that
many free plans in one day. Nothing to bitch about really, in the past
we've probably gotten more than that in obscene trolls posts in one day
- on many days. I figure my inspirational posts are better than that,
any day.

Oh, one more thing - I assumed you were using broadband at the hotels.
You weren't using dial up by any chance were you? I've never had a
problem with dialup to my ISP from anywhere - I just can't stand to use
it, especially when some of the hotels charge $1.00 for each phone
call. More and more of the hotels are going all wireless. I use
earthlink at home and they simply will not allow you to access
newsgroups in any manner unless you are on their network - impossible
on the road unless you dialup. Ptooey!

Usually it's your news provider/ISP who determines whether or not you
can post a binary to a non-binary group. Any responsible one won't
allow it.

Usenet is not the web. The fact that there are web interfaces to access
Usenet is irrelevant to Usenet, IMO.
The problem you have is that you are using the wrong interface to
access news groups, plain and simple. The reasons *why* you are using
that interface is also irrelevant to Usenet, IMO.
You can ride a moped on the freeway, but don't expect other drivers to

Yes, and they're all from the same person, with the same word in the

So, let me get this straight. You agree that they're on-topic, you
point out that they are consistantly marked, and you want him to
go away with them? Wouldn't it be easier to ignore them, either
manually or programmatically? If your newsreader doesn't support
ignoring any message with a particular word in the headers, or
a particular sender, get a better one.

So because of your choice of a limited newsreading tool (in this case,
web-based), you want him to change how he's doing things, for you.

Seems to me that telling him to go to a different group is equivalent
to "go away with them".

This fits any definition of "go away" that I can think of.

I don't think we need another group for this type of post. They are as "on
topic" as you can get to a woodworking newsgroup so why not keep them here.
I don't see bandwidth as an issue because all you're getting in the subject
line. Very little traffic there.
What JOAT could do to reduce the number of posts would be to do an
'Inspiration' post and list all the stuff he finds in that one post. But,
I'm not his momma so I can't tell him what to do. Just a thought. :-)

You can't google for the word INSPIRATION in rec.woodworking at
groups.google.com? (hint: yes, you can. Trivially so. Just as it's
trivial to ignore messages with that in the subject with any decent
newsreader.)

Yes, apparently we have different meanings in mind of how "go away"
is or is not the same as "don't do it here". I can't see much point

Do us both a favor and killfile me then, wouldja? Thanks awfully.
Guy wants the world to change for him; I provided several ways he can
get what he wants without a useful resource being taken away.
I kinda like the idea of a separate area for plans. Don't get me wrong
though, I certainly don't mind JT's inspirational posts as it is now, and i
do take the time to look at most of them.
But there are many people who inquire just about plans and I'm sure many
more of us who have many plans saved somewhere on the hard drive that could
potentially be posted. (I know if I unloaded all the plans on my hard drive,
it'd probably "tilt" a server or two!)
It may complement a.b.p.w. as well. One could say "here's what i built,
plans posted at rec.plans" or something.
I guess I'm all for sharing as many resources as we can, and keeping them as
easy to access as posssible. --dave

My primary source is uni-berlin. No binaries.
My secondary source is what Comcast provides, which I believe is
Giganews. Good retention on binaries.
My tertiary source is TeraNews. Unpredictable service but is free
(although I believe they have instituted a low one time fee since I
signed on with them).
I've really never had a problem getting through to the Wreck on
uni-berlin on the road, although, as you have experienced, there may
be a problem with providers who use password protocols that don't get
along with the hotel interface. This also happens to me when I try to
access Giganews or TeraNews at work.
When this happens I get an error message that I can't defeat.

Hear! Hear! JOAT is as thoughtful as possible in using subject headers
that allow the reader to decide whether to read. While the nature of
the posts is a distinct subset (rec.woodworking.plans?) the volume is
small enough to easily stay in the larger, on-topic group, and is too
small, IMHO, to warrant a group of its own.

I'm glad you brought it up. We've been looking to make a couple of changes
here and have a moderator for the group. We need a volunteer for the spot.
Are you interested? If so, just mention it and we will vote you in. Most
of us agree on having a moderator, but we're just not sure how to go about
it.
I hope you can and will help us.
Thanks,
Ed

Good lord, of all the crap in here you object to that the most?
> Thoughts anyone? JOAT, thoughts?
Here is an easy way to get thoughts from JOAT: Write the following, or
something like it:
"I searched for free plans for a futon but could not find any. Does
anybody have free plans for one?"
A subject like "Anyone got free plans?" will help it gain the attention
it deserves.
I give you a pretty good chance on hearing from him. While you are at
it, you could try emailing him privately and asking for some as well.

Maybe some suggestions after you see how this group works.

It's not a binary newsgroup so I have to ask, would it be appropriate for
the posting of binaries? Usenet etiquette would say no, but that doesn't
deter everybody these days.

How hard is it to go to the Advanced Search page, and type the word
"inspiration" in the <without the words> block, before you click on Search?

Don't take it too personally. A while back there was
a particularly obscene and persistent troll that was
attacking JOAT for no logical reason I could ever see.
It got quite bad for a while and I suppose folks here
may be a little quick to circle the wagons if it
seems like someone might be starting that up again.
One of the troll's favorite things was to post a complaining
response to every one of JOAT's inspiration posts.
So, you hit a little close to a sore spot there.

Yeah... what he said. It's not JOAT's fault you can't run a normal newsreader.

Well, this newsgroup is big, maybe even classified as "huge." But
it's amazing the majority prefer it that way. Occasionally, I
appreciate JOAT postings and any thoughts by others who have an
inspiration or wood design thought. Wood can be shaped into just
about any crazy idea. For the most part, I'm a "traditional"
woodworker, but enjoy seeing something out of the ordinary at times.
Creating more groups means more unwanted crossposts. The only reason
ABPW makes sense is that this newsgroup is strictly a non-binary
discussion group.

And everyone has said (some gently and some harshly): since it is
trivial to group them as it is, and to ignore them if they are not of
interest, why bother with moving them?

I'm not going to suggest that Joat move his posts because I like reading
them. Along the same lines however, it would be nice if there was a central
location that one could go to and view them. (Aside from going to google and
implementing a specific search parameter)

I carry around an AOL Trial CD as an emergency backup but the places
that I stay in are mostly on broadband. Plenty of hotels don't charge
for local calls and AOL has that pretty well covered.
Sometimes I carry a Sprint Cellular wireless card that plugs into the
PCMCIA slot but the throughput is usually slow.
I have a lot more problem maintaining a connection to our remote ERP
interface when I'm on the road than I do with the Wreck. It's Axapta,
and if you work for a company that is thinking of using it - tell them
not to bother.

Well Dave is our local self appointed net nanny. I have been here for 4 or
5 years and when he came on board a few months ago he was suggesting how I
should post. I still post as I wish.
I like the way that JOAT does his internet search results - easy to pass by,
but easy to identify the ones that might hold something of interest to me.
And I have even benefited from a few of them in finding something that was
of use to me, or maybe just enjoying a comment that JOAT may have posted
with the link. Since it doesn't cost anything to have them here, and they
are so well labeled, I am certainly in favor of JOAT continuing to post
here, and thank him for doing so.
