OT:eBay advice

I purchased an item on eBay and could not pay for it as the merchant's cart
would not accept my payment. I sent the seller an email and got an email
back late the next day with a link to the broken cart! Tried to pay again
and of course it still does not work. Sent a dispute to eBay asking them to
remove the item from my cart as I could not pay. Response, we cannot do
that. Sent the merchant another email and this time they suggested I buy the
item from their website. I'm not about to do this, since the item still
remains in my cart on eBay. I sure don't want to get dinged for two items
once this merchant gets my credit card #. I get a third email from the
merchant asking why I haven't paid and I explain AGAIN that their cart is
broken. I also told them their wasn't a chance in hell that I was going to
pay for this item since they could not get their act together and that I had
bought elsewhere. I also offered to refund their listing fee.

Of course now I've got an unpaid item dispute from the merchant, despite
offering to refund his listing fee. Being an asshole, I reported him for
trying to sell to me outside of eBay. (His email). This second dispute to
eBay was as useful as the first. eBay seems to be replying with script 1A
for question 1Q.

Any advice.

Sorry if this is too basic, but did you try using a different web
browser or a different computer? I've found that to be helpful with
some broken links.

No, it wasn't a browser issue. The merchant is using a funky 3rd part
payment system, which indicated that he had not set up any payment options.
I sent him a screen print of the message twice. He indicated that it was
eBay's fault, which I don't get, when he wasn't using their cart.

As for paying buy cheque, I buy online to AVOID the mail. I guess I'm
impatient (rhetorical), but if you're selling you sure as hell need to make
sure the buyer can pay.

Thanks, sounds like good advice.

Unfortunately, they threaten to deny feedback on 'unpaid items' and I
believe they can also ding your credit score.

Why didn't you pay via cheque then if you where not having any joy paying
the other way?

Ebays policy is...once you have commited yourself to winning the bid you
are bound by that policy to buy it with whatever means of paying for it.

No, your credit score cannot be dinged. As for the feedback issue..... well,
birds won't stop flying, the sun will still shine, and life will continue.
Feedback won't affect life one way or another.

I would just send an email saying that since your tried to pay and cannot
pay using the methods agreed upon when you bid on the auction, you now
consider the sellers contract null and void.

To be honest I smell a rat and would walk away without leaving any feedback
at all. If he dings you, fine. A simple reply to it like "seller wanted
me to pay in an unorthodox manner after normal ways to pay failed" says
volumes and no one would fault you for being cautious.

Ebay won't do anything. They are in it for the money only. They will not
be an arbiter between two parties.

Walk away from this one.

Ding you credit score? That is laughable. Scammers will use any sort of
tactic to entice you to give them your money. Forget about paying and
walk away.

I make sure that Every message between me and a seller goes through ebay
messages - this leaves a trail. If a seller has a problem with some third
party package and I am prevented from paying, I immediately message them
and tell them to let me know - via ebay - when they have a means for me
to pay. I've had to do this a few times and eventually they decide they
want the money and figure out how to let me pay. It's not ebay's fault,
it's not the customer's fault, it's the seller's fault and it is their
responsibility to set it right.
