A word of caution concerning this method. Carefully match the grain of
the filler strop to the piece it is going to fit into. This can be a
problem if the piece you are trying to match has crooked grain. And you
want the filler to be a perfect fit.

Been there Done that, if you don't match or don't fit perfectly the
short cut tends to stick out like a sore thumb.

Darker woods, not so much of a problem.
