I have a bunch of air tools from framing nailer, 2 finish nailers, and a bunch of
others including 2 sprayers and a sander.
I decided to mount them on the wall because it looks cool to me.
I got a sheet of blue 1 1/2" thick styrofoam 2x8' and carefully cutout the shape of
the tools so they squeeze tight into the cutouts then mounted the sheet (4x4' now) on
1 1/2" thick strips of 2x4 on the wall so when you push in the bigger tools they hold
tight. I put backing behind on the wall for the smaller staplers and pin nailers.
It looks cool, every tool has it's place, and it cost about 6 bucks.

Sounds good - can you post a link to a picture?
I only have 1 air nailer, but I'll roll the idea around a little bit
and see if I can think of some way to use it for hand plane storage.

I was going to ask about that. All you have to do is round the edges
and they don't lose a little bit of foam every time you pull it out and
put it back?
It's been a while since I worked with styrofoam. That's tougher than I
remember.

I'll take a picture and put it on a photo site as soon as I snag new batteries for my
camera. My rechargebles have died on me.

It works great for hand planes. I only have 3 big crappy ones for rough work but they
are also mounted in a 6 inch by 36 inch chunk of blue 2" styrofoam that I glued to
the wall. They were the first things I mounted this way a couple years ago.
If you have a bunch of nice ones it would look really cool. You could cutout veneer
or doorskin plywood just slightly bigger than the styrofoam cutouts and glue that to
the foam to end up with a nice wood finish. I've considered that. Nice 1/8" thick
door skins are very cheap and come in some great woods.
I used the blue styrofoam when I built my shop to insulated various areas where batts
wouldn't work and ended up with a few sheets left over.
